Britney never owned a single master to begin with, but she owned a handful of songwriting credits plus her likeness. Now she owns nothing.

Taylor didn't own her masters (until now) but she owned the main songwriting credits and likeness, meaning she could do "new masters".

Anyway, well done to whoever conned Britney into doing this deal. I actually reckon it was a long con, and that's all I will say.

Pray a technicality happens and the deal is voided, because this is just sad.

I agree. It isn't a great deal at all. I dont think she was conned though. I think this just proves how much Britney HATES the music industry and her own music, music overall now. She'd probably heard the first number and said Yes. Because her book rights apparently was sold for alot.

Same for the copyrights of her music to be used in the upcoming movie.

Its all coming together now, that she is SERIOUS about the "Never doing music again" thing. She said yes to a movie , written a book, sold her music and for such low deal now. So she is done with it all.

Yep. 100% agree with you on all fronts. 2004 Britney had started a trust to PRESERVE and PROTECT her wealth, from everyone, including her own family. She was smart. Thats why she was trafficked. She was powerful, and smart, and talented, and business/money savvy. She would have NEVER settled for this pathetic deal. She said on Instagram "they ruined it for me" after the c-ship was done. They ruined it for her so much that she was willing to throw away her lifes worth for a pathetic 200 million? And retain ZERO ownership? The deal is objectively terrible. TERRIBLE. And people who know assets and finance would agree. After digging through the court documents, I literally cried. I cried. Because I was a wealth and asset manager at once of the biggest banks in the world for over 10 years between 2013-2023. I did this for a living. If Britney was one of my clients, I would have advised her to change the deal and retain at least partial ownership of her rights share. This is SO ******* tragic.

I think it's best that someone who is invested would take care of her catalog. We don't know how she feels about her discograpy atp (except for Blackout), but I assume after she has basically retired, she isn't interested in revisiting it.

Plus she has other ventures, such as very successful fragrance line, to generate revenue. Her book must've gotten her a pretty penny as well

It's only the part of her catalogue that she owned. She didnt own the publishing, didnt own the masters, and doesn't even have a writing credit on most of her actual hits besides Everytime and Work *****.

So taking that into account this feels like a pretty lucrative deal. Especially since a catalog's worth is from how much you try to keep it alive, and she doesn't seem to have the desire on doing literally anything with it.

So whoever bought it will likely do a great job at keeping it alive even if just to get their ROI.

This. I'm not understanding the people saying this is a bad deal. I love Britney down, but the only song she has 100% authorship of is Someday. Then the vast majority of her authorship credits are below 50%, and even THEN she mostly has credits on deep cuts like Don't Hang Up and What You Need.

I wish she could've got more, and I am curious if she shopped around a bit or if she just went with the first deal she was given to get it over with, but I have a feeling that a lot of fans are upset because this feels like another nail in the coffin of Britney's career.

Of course, a lot of artists have sold their catalog and continued touring and releasing music, but Britney is a special case. She's stated several times that she wants nothing to do with her career or the industry at large, and this deal reaffirms that. I can't say that I'm not disappointed too, but at some point we're going to have to come to terms with letting Britney Spears™️ go. She's happy, (relatively?) healthy, and free, that's what matters.

Yeah. People need to understand that people arent going to just write a giant cheque when there's very limited autonomy regarding her music for the new owners.

Like, not owning either the masters or the publishing, whatever they can do to maximize profits still has to go through approval of the masters owners, and the publishing owners.

When you own either masters or publishing you get yourself some autonomy, but this isnt the case here.

Also, im sure Taylor's debacle made firms more wary of the issues they could have when signing these things. The worst that could happen to an investment group is a multimillion deal being rendered useless because one of the parties with decision power wants nothing to do with you, and that is a risk they are kind of subject to in this scenario.

They wont know if every party will be as cooperative as they wish until they get there!
