Britney Spears sells her rights to her music catalog

Featured Replies

Britney Spears just signed a massive new music deal ... one that sells her rights to her extensive music catalog ... TMZ has learned.

According to new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, Britney sold her ownership share of her catalog to Primary Wave, a music publisher.

It's unclear how much Britney was paid for the music ... the exact dollar amount is not in the documents, but our sources described the agreement as a "landmark deal" in the ballpark of the $200-million deal Justin Bieber signed when he sold his music.

I think seeing as she has made it abundandtly clear that she has absoutely ZERO interest in returning to the industry and NONE of the people in her life are worth leaving an inheritance for, I say: get every cent, Queen, and SPEND every cent! Live your best life with plenty of $$$ to go around.

It scares me she sold this for cheap. She might just be joking but in recent years she will say things like "i forget i'm famous" or act really excited when not as popular artists will mention her.

I never understand what these deals mean. She doesn't have songwriting credits on most of those songs so what has actually been sold?? The label will own the recording masters, not her.

Does anyone know what this means for her unreleased content? Or do we have no way of knowing without knowing the deal terms?

Gimme the unreleased albums NOW jonnycat

Edit: looks like she just sold her share to a third party, I'm assuming RCA still owns the majority, so nothing has changed. If I'm understanding correctly. Britney just won't receive royalties anymore in exchange for a lump sum?

Selling one of the most iconic pop catalogs in history for $200M is actually insane.

I think she is the only artist where I think, that this is the best. Her family destroyed her because of her music. She is making sure, that no one would inherit her catalog, something her own family used her for.

Hmm I feel like she should've waited a bit longer until after her biopic was released (not sure when that is?) to sell it

Did she have to sign off on this tho or did someone do this without her being involved

Well I guess this is the final sign that she's done with her career.

Her career is really over. Sad being a fan knowing this but good for her 👏🏼

There is a lot to unpack here, but my first thought is how she can get something resembling a decent team around her that isn't looking to rob her blind.

I know people have mixed feelings here about her sons. I'm ambivalent.

The next is regardless of what you think of her talent, the catalog should be worth objectively more than this. She probably doesn't have the emotional strength to have looked for someone to offer more and figured she should take this before it degrades in value. I don't blame her.

I'm a bit confused though - I mean, I don't know, just anecdotally, I hear her constantly. Maybe it's just me - i'm talking commercials, the mall, the gas station, the airport. I know things are more complicated than that, but whatever.
