It was kinda meant to be. She switches genres so much (which I love), but it doesn't build her a strong audience. So when the music and the talk don't come together like they did with Flowers, she's gonna struggle. Even tho this for me clearly has some of her best work on it.

Disclaimer: I don't hate Miley (love Plastic Hearts). I know this has some acclaim on here, but this album was lowkey up its own ass. I don't begrudge her trying something different, but a lot of it ranged from songs that were ambitious, but somehow ended up underwhelming (title track), to mellow soft rock, which I found boring. I think it would have helped tremendously if the videos were something other than glorified spotify visualizers. A great video can really elevate things, yet that was not it. She even admitted she blew the budget on the clothes, which was cool for her and select diehard stans, but as a whole it was so boring, unimaginative and a pointless exercise in vanity (and if we want to look at someone slaying it in 90s Mugler, we can just go on pinterest tbh). Overall, I felt she had nothing much to say with this album, but wanted to do something statement-making and Beyonce-like regardless.

In the last years i been noticing how she's deep in the fashion and luxury world now
She traded the drugs and crazyness for a healthy fit life and hollistic zen approach to things
and i wonder if this album was an excuse to showcase her fashion taste*love lol
Some people miss the old miley but i personally love her now. She looks far happier

Do we have interviews from this era talkin about every look-archival fashion from the vids? The story behind em?
Is all that fashion owned by her or borrowed?
Some of these songs feel very retro too. Im curious about the influences of each song

Oh yeah, I think it's the Zane Lowe one if you want to go listen.

My problem is that Miley is so quirky and earthy that I feel she doesn't suit a lot of the clothes, so I just didn't feel this hardcore fashionista thing she's trying to have going on. She's not otherworldly in essence like Anya Taylor Joy tbh, and a lot of it feels too severe for her. She can do couture, but feel like she looks best in more fun yet glam looks that suit her personality tbh (Plastic Hearts was her best fashion era IMO). I agree, I'm happy she's not going through a hard time anymore, I was worried about her when she was hanging out with that cult tbh.

I think Cher during the 70s and 80s is a close comparison. Everybody knew of her, she had a solid enough fanbase, ventured into other areas, etc. etc., but she was never racking those consistent back-to-back hits like Donna, Diana, Madonna, Whitney, etc. Of course, Miley could only wish to win an Oscar, but you get the point.

I think people placed too many expectations on Flowers, expecting it to be the beginning of an Emancipation-style comeback, when it was far closer to a one-off.

End of the World, Easy Lover, Walk of Fame, Every Girl You've Ever Loved and Reborn are A+ songs

The rest is forgettable

It was a dumb move to drop the title track, the most left field thing on there, as the first taste of the album. It kind of turned people off and sucked out any hype she had for when she put out End of the World.

It's a shame because it's a great album.

She has no fanbase. She needs a hit single to carry and album this album lacked the hit single and thus it lacked success.

The can be artists that build a fanbase and can have successful albums without a hit single (Lana), but those artist generally spent a good amount of time, building their base, creating a consistent and unique sound, and developing interest in their artistic journey. Miley has historically done the opposite of that.

Miley is a GP artist. Either her songs smash, or they flop - but for the most part they flop.

Still eligible for a RIAA certification. Even the small victories count.

End of the World was one of the best singles of last year tbh

At least Germany and Belgium gave that song its flowers

Sometimes talent loses

It's one of her worst albums imo so it was rightfully ignored by the GP. She tried to go more artistic, but the music was pretty mid overall. Also she seems to have lost a of her fans over the years with her constant changing of sounds and hating on her older albums

I'd rather get this Stevie Nicks leaning masterpiece than another bland ballad for some wide appeal.
