Is Gaga closer to Taylor Swift or Björk by artistic integrity and quality?

Featured Replies

Let's try settling a debate that has been brewing within ATRL regarding McDonalds and Filet Steaks. It is apparent that metrical success is no longer the main drive for drags and lashings unless it's for Katy Perry and Xtina, now artistic integrity and quality have been increasing factors for stan drags. We have on one side Taylor Swift and on another side Björk, where does Miss Gaga fit in this arena?

no MPG has Björk's artistic integrity and quality, they're all selling a product

  • Are we still pretending that Bjork has more than 10 listenable songs? And oddly enough those are some of the poppiest in her discography. Hmmmm

You can tell OP just started listening to Björk a few months ago toofunny3 Anyway to answer your question she's neither closer to Bjork or Taylor. They're all drastically different from each other.

Taylor Swift.

much closer to Taylor imo, I find her music to be extremely basic even if her visual aesthetic suggests otherwise.

She is more closer to Madonna, Bowie, MJ and Prince than anybody else

In the middle.

Gaga would be like sushi. People say it's for women or gays, but everyone enjoys it. And it also exposes you to diseases/parasites because you're basically consuming it raw — or bareback when eating it.

Taylor Swift has the highest metacritic average of any MPG (minus Beyonce and it's close) and more AOTY wins than any artist in history. Y'all not liking one album doesn't undo one of the most critically acclaimed discographies in history.

Anyway, ridiculous thread premise. Gaga and Taylor are pop stars. Björk is in an entirely different lane.

Closer to Taylor. Two incredible artists that will both end up in the songwriters hall of fame.

Objectively I'd say she is in between the two ...

But as a Björk fan you should be able to appreciate Gaga's artistic endeavours even if they might not reach B's level, which is why I don't quite get how a supposed B fan is frequently trying to drag G and also making flamebait threads about her ...

Just my two cents ...

I love both Gaga and Björk dearly. (My avi is Gaga and my username is Björk related) and I'm sorry but Gaga is on a very similar lane as Taylor Swift, making radio pop and mainstream ballads.

Do they have more attitude and personality than TS, absolutely. But to say Gaga is making avant-garde, hard to digest music as Björk is not the case.

Lady Gaga is a capital P pop artist, that's not new or something she has ever hidden. I guess closer to Taylor but it's like comparing Metallica and Oasis bc they're both technically rock bands, not an apt comparison.

Every music legend is closer to Taylor than to Bjork, you don't get to that level without catering to the masses

Shes just a Madonna copy. Period. Close thread.

Quality in music is subjective. But if you mean by Filet Steaks is unlistenable tuneless music, then I'd take McDonalds any day. Idc.

The limited edition Björk Fossora ornaments on my Christmas Tree (stream on Apple Music or Spotify) would like to have a word with you! Mother knows how to sell a product or two as well.

?

Obviously closer to TS, but I do wonder where Gaga might've ended up musically if she wasn't so eager to please. I think Mayhem is a major return to form, but it is also, for most part, an exercise within some musical constraints she has set for herself. Everything, except maybe Killer, is very palatable for most tastebuds.

There is or was a more ferocious Gaga in the past, who used songs to express something very primal. Swine, for instance, is acidic with anger; lots of BTW mixes irresistable melodies with genuinely weird song structures. I think, if she had trusted her own vision, she could've been a Madonna-like trailblazer in pop music. Now she's simply an extremely good pop star, which is still more than you can say for most commercial artists, obviously.

Please don't compare Gaga to a basic white girl only capable of writing love and breakup songs.

Smile and nod.

I don't think it makes much sense to try to consider any of these artists as ends of the same spectrum and to evaluate the third on the line between those points unless we're purely talking about "how intrinsic are they to discourse about capitalism in the music industry?" They do entirely different things with entirely different sounds, and if anything, Taylor and Gaga are only closer to each other because they're both pop stars making pop music for pop radio and pop consumers, not because any inherent quality of their artistry is substantially similar besides both leaning into synthpop as a primary subgenre relatively often.
