Why did the GP gravitate more towards Cardi B than Doja Cat?

Featured Replies

Am I The Drama - 200k

Vie - 57K

Both had a mediocre single chart run with no real current hits to push the album yet Cardi succeeded. Why? Doja has been putting out more pop hits and albums in this last decade and is considered the "pop" artist amongst them both.

One didn't insult her previous record and call them money grab, just to go back to that genre when everything else stopped working for her.

  • As much as some in this thread are clearly struggling to accept it, Cardi is America's Sweetheart and when she drops they pay attention despite her general absence in the last 5 years.   Doj

  • They are both rappers and Cardi appeals to the hip hop/Black community more. Hip hop fans are more loyal than pop fans in general.   Artist like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Taylor have maintained

Doja seems very promo sensitive and needs the GP to help her music grow over time. I fear she's doesn't have a huge built in fan base anymore.

Cardi's been doing viral marketing for months. Doja basically just pushed out a single and then the album 1 month later, so it's like 'iykyk' :nicole2:

Artist like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Taylor have maintained as pop girls because their core fanbase started outside of pop ( R&B, R&B/Caribbean, country respectively)

there you go

GP is fickle, she doesnt really have a big fanbase even before her recent antics, and rap listener doesnt take her seriously

kinda like nicki queeƒ era minus the rabid fanbase

Going back to pop music with Antonoff after releasing Scarlet and calling her previous pop albums cash grabs seems insincere

as someone above said, a lack of taste

but also cardi is fun and gimmicky and the public find her persona entertaining and relatable (even if they don't particularly like rap or weigh up music the same way as us stans do)

people in my own life (locals) have said doja is "weird" and i bet they don't even know about the 4chan vibes of it all. i just don't think she cares enough to mute her personality and stands firm in her edginess

Cardi has been rolling out this album since WAP in 2020. Doja Cat has release three album during the time, plus Doja cat isn't pulling stunts like cardi. $5 coupons on $4 dollar albums, DoorDash, begging people on the street  and subway to buy her album and etc. Isn't Doja cat out streaming cardi overall tho?

Dojas era has no hit single, cardi's has a few five year old hit singles :eddie:

aside from that, people have been perched for cardi's second album for a long time, doja it's the opposite, she chased a lot of people off during scarlet

the 80's sound doesn't resonate with the GP anymore and doja's core fanbase is a lot smaller

vie is the better album by far so who cares

Cardi established a relationship with the GP through being on reality tv so people like her more

Doja had a bit of buzz with gen-z that died off the second she stopped being what they projected onto her. They wanted her to be a sexy pop star with a rap shtick and it was VERY clear to anyone following her since Purr/Amala that that was very put on and wouldn't last.

She has 8 songs in the Apple top 100 and they're all songs from this year :eddie:

I love both women and albums, and I wish Doja could had a bigger start with Vie cause the album is very good and she is a wonderful artist. She deserves all the success in the world tbh. Cardi is a one of a kind and, unless you are a Barbz, it's impossible to not love her. And lbr… Drama is amazing! :dramacat:

Anyway, people are drawn to authenticity and Doja is very inauthentic. I like her but that's the truth :michael:

Cardi's album was both well received and promoted in a clever way — She leaned into her personality for multiple viral clips online, and it worked.

Plus, just because something isn't big on the Hot 100 doesnt mean an album is hitless. Outside was massive on both Rhythmic and Urban formats, and Safe exploded on those formats upon release. That's who she's targeting, not someone tuning into Z100.

Y'all really just say anything on this site because nothing about this woman gives "America's Sweetheart" and all her singles (solo and featured) have flopped prior to the album coming out.

I think it really just comes down to her persona after the Planet Her era. I've seen arguments made that it's because her fanbase is small because she didn't tour during the pandemic, but I don't buy that. Even for artists that do well with the GP, you don't nab 15 top 40 hits (9 being Top 10s) in less than 5 years with a "small" fanbase. It's pretty obvious that between Hot Pink and Planet Her she gained a ton of fans, especially with Planet Her being one of the most monumental pop albums of the pandemic era. She was huge. And the success of her tour for Scarlet proved that.

I think it really just comes down to the scandals + commentary about the albums that drew people to her being "cash grabs" and shaming her fans for having a base name. People don't like it when rich people bite the hands that feed. I think she could actually regain GP support if she matured a bit and stopped tweeting like a 14-year-old edgelord. She still has time to change it.
