I'm glad she mentioned this and I would hope more artists would work this way. Arts first and foremost.

Also, somehow this feels like shade towards Taylor since she is obsessed with charts, numbers, etc.

Wasn't she the one reposting Billboard charts on Insta story back when Flowers was #1? And posting stuff like "ESV already has over a billion streams on Spotify in less than a month & Flowers is #1 for the 10th week in a row! Overflowing gratitude. Thank YOU," & "Flowers is spending a 12th week globally at #1 THANKS TO YOU!". I guess she doesn't care anymore because she's been flopping for 2 years straight as of now

Why is it always my fellow swifites that get especially angry whenever a pop girl says numbers shouldn't be the main focus of your music career :deadbanana2:

She is clearly trying to cope after her last major flop but overall she's right, arts not charts

:sabrina:

When you're neither for the arts nor the charts, your name must be Miley Cyrus

:sistrens:

It's easy for someone to say this after looking at the numbers of her last album.

She's right, numbers are a mere consequence it shouldn't be what drives the artist nor the listener. If you appreciate a sing it doesn't matter if it went diamond or just gold and if it did can u say that u genuinely liked it or are just in for the momentary hype?

But you don't mind the numbers when your pockets are overflowing, hag

I mean, isn't Miley still spending money from Hannah Montana days? She's rich regardless. I'm sure she doesn't mind getting a hit here and there but she has never really given me "obsessed with numbers and charts" vibes, even back in Bangerz era. That was more about her wanting to dead her childhood image than sell truckloads of records.

From "My records live in the top 10" to "It's not even about the charting, it got so much tiktoks, reels... That means people are genuinely listening to it" :clap3:

Generally yes thats right Miley. But you didnt use that method when Flowers or Wrecking Ball were released. 😂

ppl who talk like this are usually critically acclaimed or award darlings. miley is neither so she sounds ridiculous

I think she's happy when she's successful but is also ok when her material flops. Can't Be Tamed and Younger Now crashed and burn, was she that affected, really ? The girl has more money that we can even conceive, just with the Hanna Montana brand alone. Thanks to syndication, she receives huge checks yearly without doing anything. This alone put her in another stratosphere than most music artists. By the way, I remember her speaking about knowing she was an industry product but that she will distance herself from that kind of HUGE pressure in the near future (she said this to Monica Lewinski or the NYT, if you wanna check this out). This was just before the release and the weak numbers of her new album so she was already in that "letting go" state of mind, to begin with.

Also, don't forget that her eras being so different from one another, that didn't ensure stable success but she's propably the most iconic pop girl from her gen (sans Ariana, of course). Her ready 2013 VMA performance was really the last water cooler, "halloween costume ready"n moment we've had (yeah shock value and gimmicks were used but most iconic performances follow that pipeline too so). Also, you have "Hanna Montana" Miley, "PITUSA" Miley, "The Last Song" Miley, "Can't Be Tamed" Miley, "Bangerz" Miley, "Malibu" Miley, "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" Miley, "Plastic hearts" Miley and "Flowers" Miley. That's super impressive for someone so young, really. The number only tells one side of the story, she's right on that front.

I'll go as far that a few more successful eras from her peers remain less recognizable that some of her flop ones (mostly because they're more invested in someone that has literally grown in front of them since 2006)! Her eras are her public story, in a way. All in all, I repeat most people are not charts obsessed and couldn't care less about numbers. Many of us heard a specific song a lot on the radio or on TV channels, back in the day, thinking it was a huge hit, only to find out it flopped when looking at the numbers. Does it erase the memories, the aural imprint said song has on our soul ?

This flopped hard upon release, yet, here we are, fifteen years laters, and it's still one of my favourite french song of the 2010s:

Since Miley won those Grammys, her entire reality got distorted and she became so pretentious. :biblio:

She acts as if her albums were masterpieces when she doesn't have a single decent work.

If she didn't care about the numbers, after leaving RCA she could have released her albums with an indie label, but she signed with one of the most powerful labels in the industry.

This is just desperate PR after the flop of a project that her team and label invested a lot of money.

:suburban:

So when are you all gonna admit that country music has completely taken over the charts.

When are you all going to admit that flowers is a classic?

And WHEN are you all going to admit that miley has more talent and charisma than most of your faves on their best day?

You all need to realize that she doesn't know who the hell you all are.

This stan war bs is so stupid. Get lives. All of you

You do know she hasn't used social media in years right? That was her team. But go off clown!

I always enjoy hearing artists destroy the chart obsessed trolls from atrl :clap3:

When your only legacy is putting on a blonde wig, and be someone else, you shouldn't act this pretentious. :sabrina:

But Miley, you don't have the impact or the number...?

This is a topic that will never settle, because they are come together.

You need number to make impact, because numbers means popularity, popularity gives you the impact.

At the same time, you need to be impactful to make numbers.

Look at Taylor, TTPD's number did not come from art, it's from her personal impact.

Gaga/Bey is still pulling decent numbers, because they are impactful, but what made them impactful? Their previous numbers.

But it's also true that if you only chase after numbers without any artistic vision, you will fade soon.

this is why you don't date your producers

at least she released the album. my fave could take some notes about dating your producers and actually releasing it :suburban:

she's right tho. the obsessing over charts in 2025 doesn't even make sense anymore. unless you're Taylor, Drake, Bey or Morgan (with the exception of a v select few others) no one is really selling that well these days. music is fractured so just enjoy it. obsessing over numbers is so childish to me esp when it comes to pop music because it's just not the dominant genre it once was, it was fun in 2012 and 2013 because all the pop girls were eating but now what's the point? rap and country have taken over the scene so if it's not that it's prob not doing well

Listen to the full interview. She speaks about song that matter because it brings a memory or a feeling not because a number or a chart. She's right.
