Is Lana Del Rey's success the most impressive among all the major pop girls?

Lana Del Rey, on paper, breaks so many of the "rules" of mainstream success:

Since 'Born To Die', her discography has been largely unsuited for Top 40 radio or the typical "pop" formula. She hasn't really done any major TV or awards show performances in over a decade. She basically never pushes singles to mainstream radio formats, and when she does release music videos, they tend to be simple and understated rather than the big-budget, high-concept productions most other pop stars have. Even 'BTD', which in retrospect is her most commercial and pop album, was very novel and unique at the time.

And yet, she's still one of the most successful artists in the world, currently ranking 5th among all women on Spotify in lead credits, while also selling out arenas and even stadiums across the world. In a way, she's the most anti-pop-girl pop girl out there, but she's still performing like a MPG.

So do you think Lana's commercial success, despite her "uncommercial" approach to her music and career, is the most impressive out of all the major pop girls?

  • She's Grammyless so no. I have the same amount of Grammys as Lana lmao! 🤣

She completely shifted the sound of pop music in the 2010s so yes.

  • Yes, she never compromised her artistic integrity and you can count the televized performances she did on one hand. Her success is extremely organic and interscope must be getting so much extra income

Yes, she never compromised her artistic integrity and you can count the televized performances she did on one hand. Her success is extremely organic and interscope must be getting so much extra income because of her.

Lana is highly aware of who she is and what she's good at. She has always kept making music as well, even when her career wasn't in a necessarily great place. Consistency and knowing that her artistry is purposeful are what made her career big.

Yeah. I'm not ******* with her vibe as much lately but ill always be a stan, she changed my life from 12 years old and its a bit emotional seeing her naturally become one of the biggest music stars of our generation. I always knew she would be, even when she was getting dragged through the absolute pits for the first half of her career

Yeah, everyone copied her after Born to Die and she went even more alternative... and kept enjoying huge success for a genre that was, at the time, very unconventional but that became mainstream because other singers just kept trying to imitate her

What I find the most impressive is the hold Katy has over so many gays. Despite flopping and not having relevant music for over well over a decade, people still break their heels to drag her for a couple of upvotes and some pity laughter :deadbanana2:

At least she has never performed with a strap-on.

Everybody knows she's been snubbed by Grammys. Her streams say otherwise as well as BTD being 600 weeks on BB chart.

Leonardo DiCaprio also didn't get his first Oscar till 2016, does that mean I was as good of an actor as him? Wow u r so crazzzzyyyyYy xD

I feel like she is certainly one of the most influential modern pop artists of both newer pop artists and also her peers

The way she is paid dust by industry bodies like the grammys yet who will award those imitating her sounds is truly something

Old people never recovered from her snl performance :gaycat6:

It is very impressive, she is the definition of an artist that lets the music do the talking.

this thread is not about washed up flops who spotlight sexual abusers and release nauseating turd they call music, please stay on topic.

I'd say she's up there as one of the most impressive.  She gets to make any music she wants, whenever she wants, promote or not promote, tour or not tour, etc and the GP streams her catalogue like their lives depend on it.  No one could have ever really predicted this.

Grammys are meaningless. Diana Ross has no Grammys and she's a legend.

She's proof to me that music is truly subjective and everything isn't for everyone because I have never heard a single song of hers I like :toofunny3: so yes!

Honestly, yea. I knew she was the IT girl during the tumblr era, I just didn't realize how much of an impact that era would make on entire generations, both millennial and gen z.

Yes because she never chased success after 2019 or so but it came to her anyways, it's actually insane the amount of unreleased songs by her that went viral on tiktok and yet she only released one... Most artists would've dropped an entire album of unreleased songs if they were her
