I know this might sound a bit ridiculous but I feel like a lot of that is to do with religion, especially in the US. Like people still think that pentagrams and stuff are satanic and I know some religious people who think Halloween is demonic 

But it's getting there, not as staple as Christmas music though.

I wish Halloween was a bigger event tbh.

 

We as a society need to turn October (or at least the back half of the month) into a full spooky season moment.

There isn't a lot of fun Halloween music that is specifically about Halloween and is also appropriate for radio. You can't just play scary music on a daytime radio show all day; very few people are going to listen to it. On the other hand, there are easily thousands of songs out there dedicated to Christmas.

 

I also think it comes down to capitalism. Getting people in the mood for Christmas by playing music throughout November and December gets them into department stores and malls to buy gifts, decorations, etc. You can't really do the same with Halloween since it's just a single day and no one is exchanging gifts.

No one cares about Halloween here unfortunately. I feel like the only country where it's a real event is in the US.

It's considered a very tacky holiday therefore the music is usually tacky and for people with questionable taste.

Exactly, though it's pervasive influence is growing at least in the U.K in the past 20-30 years.

 

The US makes a far bigger deal

out of it than anybody else; though, ironically, Nov 1st is a holiday in most of continental Europe ( All Saints Day ).  Frankly it just feels a pain in the neck excuse for supermarkets to clutter the aisles with pumpkins, and flog nasty cheap witches' hats to little kids' parents, who then have to trail behind their little darling mites around housing estates, on what is more often than not (in the U.K.) a wet windy evening, just as the clocks have gone back and it's getting dark at 5.00 pm or earlier.

 

I'll pass on it all thanks.

Well it's a mixture of a Christian festival (all hallow's Eve- the eve being it's the day before All Saints Day) and a Celtic festival marking the end of harvest/Summer and the start of winter- hence all the subtext of darkness and death.

 

There again both Xmas and Easter are mixtures of Christian and Pagan festivals so it fits a pattern.  All those Christian missionaries in dark ages Europe sensibly went with the flow and adapted the timing of the local festivals for their purposes ( think "ok we'll go along with this new fangled birth of a son of God thing you mention, as long as it doesn't interfere with our mid winter solstice mega boozy party that we've been running for three thousand years- deal?")

This thread reminded me of this band I remember I used to listen to. I can't remember who they were or what genre of music they put out, but I remember all of their albums were always released during Halloween season and every album cover had a spooky vibe to it. The music also had the same kind of vibe. I feel like it was electronic music.

Although the general Halloween season doesn't give songs enough of a boost to chart on Spotify until the actual day of Halloween, established Halloween adjacent songs definitely see a boost in the weeks leading up to it. Plus, I'm pretty sure every year, more songs chart and reach new peaks on Spotify on the actual day of Halloween, so it feels like it's growing slowly but surely. It kinda reminds me of the early streaming days where Xmas music didn't really impact charts much until closer to Xmas eve/day, and only a handful songs at that compared to the current yearly takeover. Maybe in another decade or so, we'll be seeing a more full blown Halloween effect like we do Xmas currently.

 

It's also worth adding that Halloween as a season just has a completely different dynamic than Xmas. A big reason a lot of Xmas music is so popular around the holidays is because people have nostalgia and good feelings associated with those types of songs, sometimes spanning back to early childhood. Halloween music generally doesn't have that same broad, life spanning appeal for a lot of people I think.

I feel like the holiday period for Halloween is shorter than that for Christmas

It kind of is but I think it hasn't stuck because not everywhere globally celebrates Halloween compared to Christmas, plus Xmas is obviously a lot more palatable.

 

Also when I say it already exists I'm talking about pop music, songs like Thriller and Xtina's OST for the Addams Family, the upcoming "Dead Dance" by Gaga etc.

Idk about anyone else but I always revert back to my metal phase when it comes to Halloween and I listen to Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson etc. I've also gotten into Goth and Post-Punk and I love love love Dead or Alive, specifically their early work.

Halloween is too short-lived, whereas the Christmas season lasts longer. Christmas is also more global

This is a very good ******* question because I've been waiting for it to take off like Christmas music has...i LOVE spooky music

There are some Halloween themed albums/songs but halloween is not AS big as Christmas for people to have massive albums or songs apart from few examples like Thriller. There are halloween classics but it's not rlly worth it to focus on that since people only stream it during halloween while christmas songs have massive peaks during whole December. This is also the reason why there aren't many Easter songs.

They made like, Skeleton Sam and Spooky Scary Skeletons. I think their whole shtick is Halloween.

Why?

Halloween is a big thing in the US. It's not in most places because it's mainly made for kids. Parents go out with their children to get some candies.

 

If we talk about music, many classics get an important boost during this time (Toxic, Thriller, Umbrella, etc...).
