Because he relied too much on shocking factor in the same thing: religion… like it was shocking the first time then ok the 2nd time but it becomes tiring and basically there was nothing behind it other than shock value.

Not many can have a career like Taylor, Billie, Rihanna, Beyonce etc.

What second album? :rip:

He had hits for four years between 2018-2022. This is a normal career expiry for a lot of artists. Same thing with Lizzo. Had hits between 2019-2022.

What dropping a godawful lead single does to you...

Montero (CMBYN) definitely relied on controversy bait promo but it was also fundamentally a good song. Same with Industry Baby and That's What I Want

The shock factor can only do so much and I hate to say it but taking on a more fem & explicitly queer image hurt his career. Many of his fans were casual ("straight") listeners who tolerated him because he came off as more "masc" & his music had catchy beats that allowed them to tune the lyrics out and just vibe (and ignore the fact that he was singing about gay sex :rip:).

His music & image became more explicitly queer, which limited his audience more. Hopefully his career can adjust and he can begin building a fan base that accepts his queerness.

His last big hit was That's What I Want at the end of 2021. Then he disappeared apart from releasing a song for a League of Legends tournament (:deadbanana:) until early 2024 when he released J Christ. So it was probably that huge gap + weak comeback single + the gimmicks being tired + his young male fanbase growing up/growing conservative

I must admit post-Montero his music is worse, which is a shame because I think Montero is good and he has potential on developing his artistry

But the main culprit is he is very queer and femme-presenting, and then the "Christian" trolling or whatever just add more fuel to the fire :!ohno:

He was a one hit wonder

He has 3 #1 songs and two more top 10 hits :rip:  His peak was a fluke but he's definitely not a one hit wonder.
