So, looking at some of Max Martin's more recent work, it feels like Blinding Lights might've been the last time he really captured the spirit of the times, and maybe his only massive hit of the decade so far.

 

Do you think he's had more moments of brilliance since then, or was that his final flash of genius?

New Woman is one of the most astonishing productions I've ever heard in my lifetime. I'd say that's his most recent peak.

Also I really, really loved Give Me Mercy from Abel's last album. Gorgeous song that should have been a single.

 

And Good Feelings from the latest Coldplay album was also great. 

 

His hit rate is far lower this decade but he is still a master at his craft. It's just that the current cultural climate rewards idiosyncrasy, which is antithetical to Max's approach. But the big names still call him for polished pop music. And they do it bc he's the best at it.

yes to both of this

i think new woman not being the lead hurt it bc everyone was perched for the first bp solo, with the initial hype it would've done something 

give me mercy could've been a big moment for Abel too since the album was marketed as the last "The Weeknd" album, could've been a great "farewell" single 

 

He is absolute past his prime but he can still produce hits with the artist

 

But he's not reshaping the sonic landscape of pop

 

He does safe and refined
