A Florida dairy farm was named in a lawsuit filed by a woman who claims she lost her unborn child after getting sick while caring for her toddler, who also got sick after drinking raw milk.

 

Rachel Maddox is suing Keely Farms Dairy, a New Smyrna Beach dairy farm, which state health officials have tied to at least 21 casesof E. coli and Campylobacter bacteria sickness from raw milk consumption, Orlando's CBS News affiliate WKMG reported. Six of the 21 patients were children under the age of 10, seven were hospitalized and at least two cases have resulted in severe complications, according to the state-issued warning.

 

CBS News Miami has reached out to Keely Farms Dairy for comment but they did not respond at the time of this article's publication.

 

A mom's unborn child died after she got sick cleaning up toddler's illness, the lawsuit says.

 

 

Maddox's filing demands a jury trial on compensatory damages for permanent physical and mental injuries incurred "as a direct and proximate result of Defendants' conduct," the lawsuit states.  
 

The lawsuit, which also names the market where Maddox allegedly bought the milk, was filed Wednesday in Seminole County and claims that Keely Farms shipped milk that contained the bacteria, WKMG reported.  

"I became very ill and I mean the sickest I've ever been in my life," Maddox told the news station. "I came really close to dying and our [unborn] son did die. The doctors told me that I was lucky to be alive."

 

According to the lawsuit, Maddox was allegedly unaware of any potential dangers while purchasing the milk in June from an organic, natural food store. When she asked about the packaging's label that "said something to the effect [of] 'for consumption by animals,'" she was allegedly told "that was a technical requirement to sell 'farm milk,'" the lawsuit claims.

 

Maddox told WKMG she had bought the raw milk on and off for months, and while she never drank it, her toddler and other family members had before without any issues.

First off, I feel horrible for her loss, especially given the context that she was reassured the product was harmless.

 

Second, everybody needs to be aware that raw milk (and raw water), and these trends that make such products go viral, are extremely dangerous. And anybody hocking this ish should be in jail.

This is why we shouldn't be taking health advice from RFK Jr  Someone says they have a worm in their brain, that's a warning sign that they are not healthy to begin with. 

What happened is tragic but she in all frankness did it to herself. The risks of raw milk are well-known and the bottled was labeled as not being for humans. She still sought it out, bought it, and gave it to her infant. She chose to take a grave risk and it had a grave cost. 

Unfortunately there are so many people still looking for unpaustarized cow's milk 

 

I was always taught if you bought fresh raw milk, you have to boil it.

If only there was a way to prevent this…

Raw water is basically water that has not been processed, tested or filtered, so basically it has all of the minerals and parasites in it. Tap water does get checked and tested by agencies and such so it's safe to use.

I really find this line annoying, the implication that somehow it is the dairy farms fault that 21 idiots from Florida's drank raw milk that just happened to be from their farm.

I don't believe she is genuinely THAT unaware and dumb.  Raw milk has become a viral social media trend and the dangers of consuming it have been across the news for months.  Does she live under a rock?  

 

However, if the farm sold her this milk and said the medical warning was "a technical requirement to sell 'farm milk", then this mother has legal reason to sue.  It's one thing to be risky or dumb and take chances with raw milk, but it's another thing entirely for the distributor to lie about the dangers directly to your face and then take your money.

Water from creeks, streams, rivers, lakes, etc. Although anything that runs and comes from a source (mountains) is safer than stillwater (never ever drink this), you still should never drink it without a filter or before boiling it.

 

OT: If the distributor lied to her then she has a case, but the onus is ultimately on you for what you put into your body and what you feed your kids.
