Multiple magazines named Madonna as the biggest competition Michael Jackson faced during his heyday in the '80s and '90s. Billboard even mentioned that she maintained a kind of healthy rivalry with him, pushing both artists to evolve and outdo each other creatively.

But looking back, it feels like the charts and media were so hyper-focused on MJ that it's hard to tell if anyone really posed a serious threat to his dominance. Was Madonna ever a real contender? Do you think MJ was ever in the studio thinking, "I better watch out for Madonna's next move"?

They wanted to outdo each other. Michael was obviously the bigger one but Madonna was able to keep up with him and she was more consistent with the quality of her music in the 90's   michael

And if we compare them in the present day, it's evident whose catalogue stood the test of time:   Michael Jackson: 18.2B overall streams // 10.8M daily streams with 335 tracks   Ma

Madonna won in the end imo, her output is way more interesting

Yea, there was some competition between them:

Madonna

Michael Jackson

Prince

They low-key tried to outdo each other with their music, videos and stage performances.

michael kinda got boxed in the guy who does the moon walk and thriller sound while Madonna changed her look and sound with each era. She was way more versatile.

MJ was clearly bigger overall.
However, Madonna is the biggest hitmaker of all time and had more consistent hits than MJ even in the 80's and 90's.

Bigger peak: MJ > Madonna

Longevity and consistency: Madonna > MJ

i view them quite differently in that michael was so monumentally huge by thriller that he could just take 5 years off, live in a theme park and depart from reality entirely, which in the end made him a worse artist, after the first half of dangerous there's not much left of interest. he's a massive overarching presence during the 80s and early 90s but eventually just becomes the weird guy with the monkey

madonna was always striving for the next thing, not that she wasn't as massive in her way but she was always looking to build on that (perhaps cos she hadn't been in the business for 15 years already). she was also able to take control of her artistry much earlier on in her career, so it has all these extra twists and turns that are very peculiar to her. i can imagine michael's fame pushing her on a bit (she's nothing if not competitive) but there's a lot more at work to her i think

I feel like MJ was jealous of Madonna's post-2000s success/acclaim, while he was flopping/being panned

For Madonna there was Janet, Whitney, Paula Abdul for a chunk of time even though she flamed out overnight.

For Michael there was Prince and George Michael who was massive at one point.

Michael's dominance shouldn't be understated, his units are much higher than Madonna's. But she maintained her quality output and musical relevance much longer.

Michael was always bigger

The reason why Madonna started getting pitted against MJ was because she was operating on the same level of global reach and cultural cache as he was. If you read all the articles and media at that time, that's really where the comparison lies.

At their prime, both of them were practically at the higher echelon of fame, with everyone else fighting at the scraps lower. MJ is just too monumental that even a megastar like Madonna was second to him

I think that's what hurt Michael.  He was always striving for the next Thriller trying to make things bigger and more grandiose and it just came off as pretentious and self flagellating after awhile.

I mean who could forget this ridiculous nonsense.....

Whereas Madonna is constantly on the move thinking ahead.  She has no time to yearn for past glories trying to duplicate her last albums success because that moment in time is already left in the dust for her because she had already moved onto something completely different.

what? no? he was about to go on a massive tour before he died?

Thriller is quite literally the peak of music consumption as a whole. No one compares to Michael Jackson.

"Massive tour" and it was an arena residency in london

And if we compare them in the present day, it's evident whose catalogue stood the test of time:

Michael Jackson: 18.2B overall streams // 10.8M daily streams with 335 tracks

Madonna: 9.9B overall streams // 5.1M daily streams with 702 tracks

Michael Jackson's last hit was in 2001, Madonna from 2000 to 2009 (when MJ passed away) she had collected 10 more hits though... This is It was marketed as a farewell tour while Madonna was wrapping up the second leg of what had become the highest grossing tour for a solo act, backed by her 11th album... different lanes.

Both MJ and Madonna's celebrities are huge but MJ, since he passed, was surrounded by scandals and by the fact that he was a man, he's bound to be much bigger.

I would assume so both were competitive. Women in pop last longer than the men so I'm not surprised Madonna was getting hits much later into her career than Michael was.
