Did Nicole Dollanganger deserve Ethel's success?

Featured Replies

Early on in Ethel Cain's career, a lot of people couldn't help but compare her to Nicole Dollanganger. Ethel herself even admitted Nicole was an inspiration and influence. The comparisons weren't random either given that both artists curated their sound and style around similarly dark themes like murder, incest, and Southern Gothic Americana.

Some fans even argue that Nicole does Ethel Cain better than Ethel Cain does (sorry, Hayden). But while Ethel has gone on to sell out 10k capacity venues and get flowers from the likes of Florence + the Machine, Nicole is still tucked away in her underground cult-following lane and sadly a total Khia.

So, did Nicole miss her moment, or was Ethel always going to be the one to take this sound to the big stage? spacer.png

And for those unfamiliar with Nicole GODanganger, here are some of her best songs:

Maybe has something to do with the level of production? Married in mount airy is by far her best album (and song tbh) and a huge step up from her previous works. Ofc her previous work is amazing as well but it's a shame an album of that level came after over 10 years

wasnt she cancelled

She bagged a collab with 100 Gecs and Fall Out Boy right after her "cancellation".

It's clear Nicole Dollanganger was not a success because Melanie Martinez made it first, which is nothing to do with Ethel - who gives something very different from both.

I don't get your point, as all I said was Ethel "made it" first. Not "started" first.
