Groovejet vs Out of Your Mind: The 2000 UK #1 Battle Turns 25

Featured Replies

Today marks 25 years since the start of one of the most iconic UK Singles Chart battles: Sophie Ellis-Bextor vs Victoria Beckham.

Midweek, Victoria led the race, but by Sunday, Sophie's "Groovejet" had overtaken her, securing the #1 spot. "Out of Your Mind" settled at #2 with 180,000 copies sold.

Did the better song win?

And a few years later, Victoria had to face Kylie's Cant get you out of my head mammoth hit. Poor Posh :gaycat7:

The better song won but Victoria's Let Your Head Go deserved to be a UK #1 so that she wouldn't be the only Spice Girl without a solo #1.

I read that Victoria performed the song everywhere. Back then you had to really promote, you couldn't just sit on your ass like artists do today. Fans were being fed back in the day.

I love both songs. But ill say I like Out of Your Mind more because 2- step Garage which i guess its a sub-genre of UK garage is something I had never heard of here in the states.  I believe Daniel Bedingfields "gotta get thru this" would also be considered UK Garage and that I definitely heard all the time on radio here in the US.

Victoria also proved that indeed she was a trained dancer because everytime we got a live performance she danced her ass off

Groovejet is definitely the better song. Victoria just has poor delivery for me in her solo music, her voice isn't so bad you have to produce around it like Geri's vocals, but it's so  anonymous that it gets lost in the sea of unique UK acts at the time.

Victoria singing lead live, and Geri was the only one who didnt sing at all

I loved reading about the Out of Your Mind era in Victoria's memoir. It was clear how much doing that song meant to her :heart2:

Groovejet sold over 200k so it was a difficult task

However, Out Of Your Mind's 180k would've been a #1 hit in most weeks of 2000, and it had better first week sales than most Spice Girls solo songs that went #1

sophie's a star is born moment and the demise of posh later inevitably music retire is very unfortunate. extremely dated aside, i bing out of your mind more on my recurrent plays just last month i think.

:khalyan:

One of my favorite TOTP performances honestly. Pop star Victoria Beckham was giving idc.

Also my conspiracy theory is that the media bulk bought Groovejet cd singles in the last 2 days of the battle just to humiliate her and label her a flop for the rest of her music career. And I'll die on that hill.

In the United Kingdom, the single faced competition in a hugely hyped supposed 'chart battle' with Kylie Minogue's single "Can't Get You Out of My Head".[2] On the chart date of 29 September 2001, "Not Such an Innocent Girl" debuted at number six on the UK Singles Chart with first week sales of 35,000 units, while "Can't Get You Out of My Head" debuted at number one with first week sales of 306,000 units.

Victoria Beckham faced a chart battle during the album's release week with Kylie Minogue's eighth studio album Fever. Both singers had previously faced a battle in the singles' chart, when their singles were released on the same day.[17] However, Beckham's album debuted at number ten on the UK Albums Chart on 13 October 2001, whilst Minogue's album topped the charts.

its giving set up :khalyan:

Groovejet is a timeless classic. LOL Poor VB, she's the only solo Spice Girl without a solo #1
