i was thinking about this for a while because the ethel cain subreddit can get extremely catty about other fans listening to her unreleased stuff due to ethel expressly getting pissed off about people spreading it etc . it's one of those things i keep my mouth shut on because a lot of fans do tend to see it as a big morality issue  (in regards to ethel i do still listen to her unreleased, however nothing that's pre-transition as i do believe that to be crossing a line)

do you still listen if you know the artist has directly said that they didn't want it out there? 

I'm that kind of person who sees a door with "Private" written on it and feels the instinct to try to open it anyway. So, if they explicitly tell me not to listen to the music, I will listen to the music.

Yes, but not as often as I listen to their released music, even if I like the unreleased stuff more. Idk why, but it's like psychologically my mind can't enjoy it as much because it's not "official?" Which is dumb. But clearly I'm not the only one who thinks this way since everyone always begs for unreleased songs to go up on streaming as if they'd sound any different. 

Most of these artists store their music in public dropbox folders. If they really didn't want people hearing it, they'd put a password on there at the very least.

I think that if it's leaked and it's scrapped, they (both the artist and disgruntled fans) should move on  It's probably not going away, and chances are that's somebody's favorite song already

it depends tbh. in Kesha's case shes said at least twice before that she (not verbatim whatsoever) likes to see the fans explore the songs that dont make the record. however that was when she was under kemosabe records and at the hands of dr luke. now that shes independent and under the hands of, well... her own. i do still listen to the "." outtakes (we have six full songs so far) but i never thought about it as a morality issue until now, now that OP brought it up that way. if Kesha in the future tells us not to listen to any Kesha Records era leaks, then i wont touch them for as long as Kesha wants.

its not because the song would sound different, its for the purpose of officially streaming and giving the artist their coins for the fan fav songs that leak. i see no problem with doing it tbh if the artist has the power to do it.

Is Kesha the only pop girl who gave her blessing to her fans in letting them listen to leaked unreleased?

in cases like Kesha, Lana, etc chances are that the songs just cos its taken off the album doesnt mean its scrapped and thrown in the bin entirely.

i mean look at albums Lana's Blue Banisters, three songs were leaked back in 2013/2014-ish and Kesha's album High Road had a bunch of Rainbow outtakes on it, and we already had Birthday Suit for years at that point lol. an artist will always try to find a home for songs if they like them enough. you just have to give them the time to do it the way they want to i guess.

i dont know tbh. i actually kinda stumbled on a transcription of an interview back in the day before Rainbow came out from like 2013 that she said (about a song from when she was 17 btw so idk how it fits tbh) even she doesnt have those songs so she liked the idea of the fans getting it. shes also performed an unleaked song called Machine Gun Love on the Warrior Tour for the entire tour.

Yeah + I end up supporting my faves / flops by purchasing merch, cd's, vinyls, tickets so at least it's something.
