Were the mid/late 90s an interesting year for Madonna, Janet, Mariah and Kylie?

250px-Ray_of_Light_Madonna.pngA body image of a young woman (Kylie Minogue) inside a cut cone with multi-coloured lights. From top: Purple, blue, mid-purple/blue, oranges and red. The woman is wearing a small blue mini dress with detail on the top left, whilst the floor has a reflection of the cone.

Image shows Carey standing in front of a brown/gold background in a beige sleeveless and mid-baring top, with darker matching pants. Her hair is long and golden-auburn, and is flowing in the air. Carey's left hand is touching the flowing tips of her hair and has a jeweled belt along her navel.A photo of Jackson looking downward

Something was in the water then because they released some of their greatest work in '97-'98

1998 is a great year. So many good albums, Sex and The City came out. And it's also my birth year

Charmed and Buffy also debuted in that time frame too!

How come? They are two completely different albums with totally different aesthetics, concepts and sounds

It's gonna 20 years anniversary of Ray of Light soon. And it still sounds SO FRESH and HYPNOTIZING.

Once in a while I go through a William Orbit binge to try to find sth similar to RoL. Guess All Saints' Pure Shores and Black Coffee come closet.

LAP was Madonna's "Deep and meaningful" album until ROL came along and that status was taken from LAP and applied to ROL and few of you remember because ROL is closer to when your memories began.

Fixed for you haha Confessions will turns 20 this year but ROL was released in 1998 so it has 27 years

but yeah it aged very well, it could have been released last year and nobody would have noticed

I'll go check your Orbit naming

So if Madonna's only reheated nachos is to make another deep and meaningful album, we are all safe

ROL is a highly conceptualized album, kinda experimental at a pop level at some point while Like a Prayer is more a personal album, we can't compare them tbh

I truly wonder why deep reflection / reinvention is so strong during this era, was it the effect of alternative scene ? Was it the ripple effect of Bjork ?

LAP tackles issues of domestic abuse, losing a parent through cancer and self advocacy in the face of violence. Perhaps you "can't compare them", but many others can and have and will go on to.

Yeah that's why I said LAP is a personal album, never said it was bad, it's a career defining moment for her and one of her most iconic album that's for sure, but claiming that ROL is LAP's nachos is a bit off the track

 No, it's not.

idk I was little too young to appreciate the pop then but I did like really like one Kylie song from that album when I was like 5 :dies:

but it def was an iconic time.

Those albums totally match the era when they got release. There were a huge spiritual/rave/dream/alternative movement in music back then, that truly pushed pop artists to be more creative and more introspective.

Kind of an insane, incredible couple of years for female pop/R&B/alternative artists because you have all these too, among others:
