The babysitting, extreme catering, and constant centering of the anxieties of people living in the Global North at the expense of the systematic horror faced by entire families living below the poverty line in occupied territories has to be one of the most frustrating, yet also radicalizing, things to watch play out in real time during a genocide.

Misleading title. That's not the Commission's – or the EU's – official position, but rather one person's (ridiculous!) claim; one for which she is being heavily criticised by MEPs, EU staff and the civil society and is in fact being pressured to step down or be removed from her role as we speak.

That still doesn't mean she spoke in the name of the Commission or that the Commission (or any EU institution)  stands behind what she said – quite the contrary, actually, if you look at the responses from EU staff, EU ambassadors and MEPs and the criticism she is rightfully faced with.

It literally doesn't tho, you're implying that the words and actions of one D-tier civil servant (out of 30,000) automatically become EU policy, which is just plain wrong.

 

If I show up at the company I work at and, in the context of an official meeting and in my position as an employee of said company, state my opinion that all profits from this quarter should go to boosting the album sales of whatever pop star curries favor with me at that moment, would that - by your logic - make it official company policy? And the only way in which it would not be company policy would be by firing me?

 

To take it on the level of politics, often cabinet ministers (especially in coalition governments) come out and, in their position as an official serving in said government, states a view, opinion etc. that does not align with the views of the rest of the government. That utterance does not, in itself, become government policy. And that's to do with actual ministers, nevermind some secreteries of state or other lower level officials serving under them.
 

It doesn't change that her takes seem to be absurd and laughable at best, reprehensible at worst. It also doesn't change that the EU has been, at best, a bystander derelicting its duty, and at worst complicit in Israel's actions.

Except she's not a D-tier civil servant. 
 

She's explicitly been named the expert voice for the European Commission on what the commission should and should not understand to be antisemitism.

 

if her words don't matter, the European Commission should then see no issue in not just firing her but scrapping what is apparently a nonsense position to begin with. 
 

I need you and that other liberal EU-defending user to understand your complaints are largely read and understood by all reading as cynical resentment where there's more worry in anyone painting the European Commission as pro-genocide than in reconciling with the fundamental issue with this role they've created, who they've staffed in it, and the intention of the person in the role in making these absurd statements.

The good sis @Communion left out the best part. This is not just any EU official, this is the EU's "antisemitism tsar". It doesn't take a PhD in Russian history to understand the irony. 

 

I can't think of a better encapsulation of Germany's policy towards Israel than somebody who proudly calls themself the "antisemitism tsar" going around telling people that baking cakes is a threat to Jews. It's almost perfect.
