For me I discovered these artists when:

- Lana when she just released "Video Games"

- Mabel's debut single

- Dua "Hotter than hell" (she was already kinda famous)

- Ethel Cain when she had less than 1k monthly spotify listeners 💀

- Tove "Habits" before it charted anywhere

- Sabrina in 2016 (she was already kinda famous)

- Billie "Ocean Eyes"

- Tate Debut EP

- Chappelle "California"
- Doja a few months after she dropped her debut EP

i was listening to it obsessively then it became a big radio hit like a year latet

i mean somewhat but not when they were complete khia's like they still had an audience 

 

Call me maybe was played for like a year on radio in Canada before it took off ww. There was a whole different album I had pre ordered before that became a hit and then the album changed completely. 
 

a different version of curiosity, talk to me, pictures, and both sides were on that album. Along with a ton of snippets that never got released. Julien was on that first scrapped album too 

 

there was a song called lost and found  (there is a couple live performances) I wanted to hear that song so bad but the album changed.

Kim Petras. I remember seeing a YT video of her covering Marina's Primadonna in her room, thought she sounded good, and hoped she would keep doing music.

I called Fujii Kaze this generations utada hikaru in 2020 and got called crazy.

Like most people my age I discovered Sabrina carpenter on girl meets world, Shawn Mendes on vine, and while i didn't watch the show I was aware of Olivia Rodrigo because of bizaardvark but didn't actually get into her until the high school musical series which I actually did watch before she blew up with driver's license 

Lana during the Lizzy Grant era, Yayo and Kill Kill immediately became some of my faves.

Marina kinda, but I guess she was already semi known, I discovered her during the Family Jewels era, and that would count during her breakout?

dua as well, but i also knew of billie eilish when she only had around 40k on ig, before the don't smile at me ep. one of my friends who makes music as well was also buddy buddy with her then too  but yeah she blew up soon after that

I discovered Lady Gaga when she preformed Just Dance at Miss Universe and started stanning since that very moment. I was obsessed with that song and her sound. This was before it blew up. So I think it counts? Lmao

I discovered Poppy when she was just the creepy YouTube android girl and only had one EP to her name, so yeah 

I saw Sophie Ellis-Bextor live, in 1998 with her former group Theaudience, which was 2 years before she had a hit with "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)", which also put her on the map.

Been stanning Ariana Grande since 2011 (but knew about her since 2010).

Been listening to Sabrina Carpenter since her Girl Meets World days.

 

Idk if this counts but I knew about Cher Lloyd before she got big in the USA.

I was watching Troye when he was a YouTuber.
