Experts say this year has produced the fewest new hit songs in US history – and it might signal the end of a singular seasonal smash

 

Chart analysts say that 2025 has produced the fewest new hit songs in US history. The mid-year report from Luminate, the company that produces the data for the Billboard charts, shows that of the top 10 most listened to songs so far this year in the US, only one was released in 2025: Ordinary by Alex Warren. All the others are tracks from 2024 and 2023 – No 1 is Luther.

They did not lie. This year is so underwhelming compared to last year; and the chart points are at all-time lows

I feel like I kept hearing back in 2022/2023 that the charts were incredibly weak and at an all time low. Have they gone even lower? 

I appreciate The Guardian's perspective but given that British-owned broadcasters have have been exposed for questionable math, I'm not sure that I can trust commentary from a British-owned paper.

 

I feel the same way. There was no defining song like Flowers, Espresso, Anti-Hero and so on. 

 

2025 has been a dud so far.
