Is Lola Young filling the 'relatable chav' niche that Raye covets?

Featured Replies

'Relatable chav' is an archetype in British music characterised an imitated souf landan accent, a sports direct haul and a council estate backdrop. The primary aim of this aesthetic is to come across like your mate down the pub, someone from your ends who has the same life experience as you. Pioneers of this genre include Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Mabel, Olly Murs and Anne-Marie.

Raye isn't shy about sharing her South London roots, often shouting out her hometown, Croydon, in her music. Lola Young, who comes from neighbouring borough Bromley, has a similar rough and ready approach to her music. With their fondness for swearing, live bloopers and deliberate imperfections in their presentation, it seems both artists are attempting to capture the attention of the Sonias and Steves of the world.

Lola Young was setting herself up to be written off as a one hit wonder, but since One Thing has taken off, it seems she could be here to stay. The locals are clearly enjoying her output. Meanwhile Raye's Mark Ronson collaboration and her F1 soundtrack song have failed to make a dent in the Primarks and Weatherpoons of Peckham and Brixton. Lots of great reviews and everyone applauds her performances on social media, but people simply don't stream the music.

Is London big enough for two MCGs (Main Chav Girls)?

These people are all middle class :deadbanana2:

lola young is filling that lizzo/meghan trainor void, but for depressed bratty british gen-alpha kids instead of buzzfeed millennials

Literally none of the people you listed are or have been marketed as chavs... at all...and their styles are all completely different :deadbanana2:

Raye's fashion the past few years has been classic Hollywood/Timeless inspired, not "relatable chav" :deadbanana4:

You may be thinking of Tulisa in that regard

That's the point. They're acting working class to appeal to a wider demographic.
