cdschart's Hot 75: April 6

One of these week's I'll get back to the full notes but for now just some highlights:

  • Kendrick Lamar's "Humble" charges in at No. 28, the week's top debut. It's his 11th non consecutive top 40 single. Meanwhile, his entry from last week ("The Heart Part 4") blasts 24-4 becoming his 6th top 10 entry.
  • The Weeknd's "Party Monster" pushes 23-16, becoming the Canadian singer's 11th top 20 entry and 9th as a lead artist. The other 10 of his top 20's have all reached the top 10. Including the Retro chart, he has 12 top 20s and 10 as lead artist.
  • Calvin Harris adds two new top 40s this week as "Slide" skyrockets 68-24 (the 11th biggest up ever) and new track "Heatstroke" enters at No. 40. He now claims 15 entries in that region, which bumps to 17 including writing and production credits on "Where Have You Been" and "Spectrum".

  • 2 weeks later...

This week is my chart's 5 year anniversary so I'm counting down the top 10 most successful songs based on weekly points/longevity. But this isn't my to date top 10 since I made back charts for the first 3.5 months of 2012 and have started making back charts from 2010 and 2011 (only one song slips out).

Anyway here goes...

Top 10 of the Past 5 Years

PyT2QDx.png

Peak: No. 1 (9 weeks) | WoC: 48 | Certification: 7x Platinum | *YEC (2016) No. 1*

Australian psychedelic rock project Tame Impala unexpectedly stormed my chart with "The Less I Know the Better", which reached the top slot on March 17, 2016. Staying there for 9 weeks, one of which saw its parent album Currents concurrently at No. 1 on the LP chart, 'Better' was the longest running No. 1 of 2016. It ended the single week reign of "Work" (Rihanna) -- which it held at bay for 8 weeks -- and was finally succeeded by Calvin Harris' "This Is What You Came For". It remained in the top 10 for 19 weeks consecutively and finished the year as the top performer, narrowly defeating Ariana Grande's "Into You" (which just misses this countdown at No. 13). Since, Tame Impala has reached as high as No. 2 with "Let It Happen" while Kevin Parker himself had another No. 1 as a producer with "Perfect Illusion".

Peak: No. 1 (7 weeks) | WoC: 44 | Certification: 8x Platinum

English pop singer Ellie Goulding continued her streak of hits, with "Something In the Way You Move" nearly instantly becoming her 8th top 10 entry upon its release as promotional track in October 2016. It subsequently became her third No. 1 after "Lights" and "Figure 8". Reaching No. 1 on October 29, 2015, 'Move' initially peaked for a single week and later returned for six more for a total of 7 -- Ellie's longest runner and at the time the fourth longest running No. 1 ever. Due to being split amongst two years, it never made the top 20 on a Year End Chart (it reached No. 21 for all of 2016). Ellie has not had a top 10 since.

iUfE5H4.png

Peak: No. 3 (3 weeks) | WoC: 70 | Certification: Diamond

Then up and coming Canadian artist Alessia Cara made her chart debut on July 16, 2015 with "Here", during the first week that the chart ran for 75 positions. "Here" was a sleeper hit, taking five months to reach the top 10 and becoming an unexpected success as it reached No. 3. Lasting 50 more weeks on the chart, "Here" became the longest running chart entry of all time (at 70 even) and eventually reached Diamond. It's the first of three songs on this countdown to not reach No. 1 within the last five years and got one of the worst split placements on Year End Charts ever for a single of this stature (No. 35 in 2015 and No. 33 in 2016). Since then, Alessia has scored an additional six top 30s (all of her entries) four of which also hit the top 10.

Peak: No. 1 (11 weeks) | WoC: 38 | Certification: Diamond

"Applause" debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated August 22, 2013, becoming Lady Gaga's first of *five* No. 1 singles. It held at the top slot for 10 consecutive weeks before dropping, breaking the record for longest No. 1 stay in the process (passing Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child" which claimed 8). Later returning for an 11th and final week at the top on November 21, 2013, the track extended its record (which has since been tied) and eventually clocked a record breaking 26 straight weeks in the top 10 before tumbling down the chart. It was the fourth of eight songs to reach Diamond status.

VYF4sOS.png

Peak: No. 4 (3 weeks) | WoC: 52 | Certification: Diamond | *YEC (2014) No. 1*

A collaboration between two relatively unknown acts, Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne's "Rather Be" was the epitome of an unexpected breakthrough. Debuting on the chart near the height of its popularity in the UK and holding well as it scaled the US chart months later, 'Be' was incredibly steady in its run. It spent 29 consecutive weeks in the top 20, reaching No. 4 four three weeks beginning on June 26, 2014. Spending an 52 straight weeks on the chart, "Rather Be" became one of the first tracks to notch a full year on and the was the first track to do so without ever exiting and re-entering. It was the fourth of eight songs to reach Diamond status, is the second of three non No. 1's on this countdown, is the highest ranked collaboration on this countdown, and is the lowest peaking track on the countdown overall. Since then, Clean Bandit has again hit as high as No. 4 with "Rockabye", also reaching No. 16 with "Symphony" and charting several other tracks. Jess Glynne has scored three additional top 40s, going as high as No. 22 with "Real Love" (also with Clean Bandit).

Next weekly chart and positions 1-5 of the past 5 years coming soon.

Part 2

COXSgLY.png

Peak: No. 1 (2 weeks) | WoC: 68 | Certification: Diamond | *YEC (2013) No. 1*

Going into the Halcyon album cycle, Ellie had already had a No. 1 with "Lights" and a further top 5 with "I Need Your Love". But the album's lead single "Anything Could Happen" was not nearly on the same level at its predecessors; it stalled at No. 32 and was off the chart within a month. Although the album clearly had potential, I could not find a highlight until "Figure 8" was released. The track entered on January 3, 2013 during the first week that the chart ran for 50 positions, ultimately reaching No. 1 for two weeks beginning May 16. Coincidentally, its predecessor also re-entered on January 3 and reached its final peak of No. 10 on May 16. At the time 'Figure' held the record for longest climb to No. 1 at 20 weeks, as well as the record for most weeks on the chart at 68 (broken by Alessia's "Here"). It was the chart's first diamond certified entry and easily finished 2013 as the top performer. Since then, she's scored numerous other hits including the 7 week No. 1 "Something In the Way You Move".

WNYmW5F.png

Peak: No. 1 (2 weeks) | WoC: 39 | Certification: Diamond

As "Counting Stars" began to scale the Hot 100, it began a quick rise on my chart, sneaking into the top 10 within a two months of its debut. By the end of 2013, the track had reached the weekly top 5, where it defied expectations by continuing to grow. Settling in the No. 2 spot for 11 weeks, it tied the since broken record set by "Applause" for the longest time at any one position and set the new record for longest time at No. 2 (Coldplay's "Adventure of a Lifetime" has since obliterated both of these records with 15 weeks at No. 2). It eventually reached No. 1 for two weeks beginning March 20, 2014, disrupting the four week run of Shakira's "Empire", and concluded its run with over 20 weeks in the top 10. It finished No. 4 for the year, becoming the chart's third diamond certified track and was the 'all-time' No. 1 by the close of 2014. Since then, "Love Runs Out" and "Kids" have both entered the top 5.

P7yZFML.png

Peak: No. 1 (6 weeks) | WoC: 55 | Certification: Diamond

Adele, despite being a huge global force, was never able to score a No. 1 on my chart... until "Hello". Backed by a massive campaign and aided by a variety of different versions (particularly the Paul Damixie remix), "Hello" stormed into my chart's top slot on November 5, 2015, marking the second biggest jump to the pinnacle (at the time). Holding steady for six weeks and tallying a record breaking 33 straight weeks in the top 20, "Hello" seemingly never got old. It lasted a massive 55 weeks before departing, becoming the seventh of eight Diamond certified tracks along the way. Since then, Adele has gotten as high as No. 2 with "Water Under the Bridge" and was a contender for 2016's Worst of list with "Send My Love".

iJGRcII.png

Peak: No. 1 (11 weeks) | WoC: 48 | Certification: Diamond | *YEC (2015) No. 1*

I would say that "The Hills" is the only track on here that I loved upon first listen. But that of course would not be true. However, it was the only track that I was confident would be a game changer upon first listen.

Entering at No. 16 in the first week of summer 2015, "The Hills" obliterated everything in its path. Reaching No. 1 in its third week, the third fastest to peak from songs on this list, "The Hills" spent a monumental 10 weeks at the top across the summer. It's slide to No. 2 on September 3, 2015 (when it was dethroned by Foxes' "Body Talk") should've been the end of its reign based on textbook cases. Instead, it held quite strong, spending the next seven weeks in the top 5 (most of which were at No. 2, three of which were behind "Can't Feel My Face") until it managed to re-top the chart for a record tying 11th week upon Abel's SNL performance.

Still holding the joint record for longest running No. 1, "The Hills" led to even more success for The Weeknd. Since then, he has tallied five more No. 1 singles, a record breaking four of which were from the same album. In addition, 'Hills' spent nearly a year on the chart, finished 2015 as the top performer despite not coming out until May and became the chart's sixth diamond certified track.

Unfortunately (?), "The Hills" lost the No. 1 spot on this countdown by less than 1 chart point.

pgFMgNZ.png

Peak: No. 2 (5 weeks) | WoC: 58 | Certification: Diamond

How this song managed to become my top performer in the past 5 years is still bizarre to me. Looking back, it does deserve the title but at the same time it had so much going against it.

Blocked from No. 1 for 5 weeks by Ella Henderson's "Ghost" at the top of 2015, split into two years and never reaching a YE top 10 and seemingly coming out of nowhere, "Habits" perfectly embodied the term 'sleeper'. Already being a bit late with this track, its slow progression up the chart and dismal 2014 year end position (No. 50) added up to a lackluster semi-hit. But it just kept going, partly because of how addicting it is.

Yet it wasn't until I looked back at the weekly charts sometime in 2015, that I realized how monumental this song truly was. It had even tied the record for longest run in the top 20 (at 32 weeks; later broken by "Hello") and I had no idea. Truly one of the best pop songs of the decade.

Since then, Tove Lo has actually had one No. 1 (with "Talking Body") and two other top 10s as a singer. As a writer, she's had one further (with "Love Me Like You Do"). Her 2016 album Lady Wood remains trash :)

"Habits" has been the to date No. 1 since July 30, 2015, when it overtook OneRepublic's "Counting Stars". It reached Diamond status on July 2, 2015, the fifth track to do so.

Habits being the most successful song here :clap3: Great song :katie2:

Figure 8 is perfect :smitten: I'm still so mad it didn't smash but at least all the fans appreciate it :heart2:

Not Anything Could Happen flopping though :jonny: Ellie being the only artist with 2 songs in the Top 10 :clap3::worship2:

SITWYM obviously slays too :flame: The Hills is by far The Weeknd's best song :jamming:

Applause was such a bop :celestial4: Here and Rather Be are nice too :flower:
