Below are The Independent critics' top 20 picks for the year's best releases. A selection of records often bearing a common thread of uplift and endurance featuring songs to help you roll into 2025, and whatever Trumpian horrors it may hold, with the deathless words of Nick Cave as succour: "We've all had too much sorrow, now is the time for joy."

19. Taylor Swift – The Tortured Poets Department
18. Kendrick Lamar – GNX
17. Bright Eyes – Five Dice, All Threes
16. Sabrina Carpenter – Short'n'Sweet
15. Hinds – Viva Hinds
14. Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft
13. English Teacher – This Could Be Texas
12. Paraorchestra – Death Songbook
11. Beyoncé – Cowboy Carter

Another boring list with no Imaginal Disk or What Happened To The Heart

I'm here for Charli winning AOTY at the Grammys. Not a big fan of the album but love her material overall, and she grinded for over a decade for this moment.

I like how every aoty list has random khias taking up most of the list and only having a few of the actual aotys on it :deadbanana4:

Because they are ranking the best and not the most popular albums of the year? What a dumb take :rip:

well lbr if they were solely basing it off of quality, taylor would be nowhere on this list. they likely take popularity into account but doesn't weight it heavily compared to other metrics
