Why did WICKED smash but the JOKER flop?

I know y'all must be thinking 'ugh, another comparison thread', and you're right but not in the correct sense. Seriously, both are musicals, both have major pop stars starring in them and the Joker itself was a massive success in its first film so people were expected to be excited for the sequel but it didn't do well.

When the Joker flopped, people said not everyone is into musicals but then the Wicked came out and proved them wrong.

Because the first joker was marketed to an audience that despises musicals, and the second joker hid the fact that it was a musical.

Wicked is the second highest grossing brodway musical only behind the lion king. It has a wider appeal in age range and it is unapologetically a musical.

Audiences don't necessarily hate musicals, they hate poorly executed half assed musicals.

JFAD was doomed from the moment they decided it would be a musical. It makes absolutely no sense and doesn't appeal to any demographic.

Jfad spat in the face of the very audience that funded it.  Everything the fans loved about the first movie was gone and replaced with musical scenes and court drama focused around a weakened Joker.

Wicked is a faithful adaptation of a beloved play that was carefully screened tested and tweaked to what seems like perfection.  The director wanted fans to love this movie, and that's what seems to be happening!  Good for them tbh!

Because it's a good movie, they have singers who can act and the songs are good.

I mean it's expected. Ariana is a much bigger name than Gaga in 2024. Just looking at their achievements this year:

eternal sunshine: #1

Harlequin: #20

yes, and? (solo): #1

Die With A Smile (Bruno Mars featuring guest performer Lady Gaga): #2

we can't be friends (solo): #1

Disease (solo): #27

JFAD box office opening weekend: $37.7m

Wicked opening weekend projection: $120 million - $140 million

They are not in the same league. :sorry:

Using Music Stat in Film Discussion is not the receipt you think it is..

Using that logic, CATS shouldve been the BIGGEST MUSICAL ever
