Zoe is currently fronrunner in many Oscar predictions for Supporting Actress but Variety has released an article saying because of her screentime, she should move to lead.

This comes a day after they moved Ariana to the top of their list for Best Supporting Actress.

i mean on a technicality, if the "supporting" character has the most screentime, then that role should be eligible for the lead award, no?

I have not seen the Zoe Saldana movie, but I feel like supporting role is not determined by how much screen time but rather their relation to the plot (as a support to the story arch).

Like I think Nick is a supporting character in the Great Gatsby despite being the narrator and thus having the most screen time.  Same with Watson in Sherlock Holmes.

Ariana and Zoe are equally as guilty of category fraud. Zoe & Karla and Cynthia & Ariana are co-leads of their respective movies.

screentime has never been a criteria for lead or supporting. The movie is called Emilia Perez, hence Karla is the one campaigning as lead.

Meryl had less than half the amount of screentime compared to Anne in Devil Wears Prada yet she campaigned and got nominated for lead actress Oscar.

Awards predictions before any precursor shows such as the golden globes don't hold any water anyway. It's not determinative in any way. :michael:

they want ariana to win so badly omg

anyway, if they move Zoe they should also move Ariana to lead.

Zoe & Karla are co-leads

Cynthia & Ariana are co-leads

that's the truth.

and with that, they would nominate the true supporting Actress with only 20 minutes of screen time (but SHINES) Selener as supporting! :clap3:

i see the vision, let's gooooooo

(oscars 2025 are WAY more entertaining than the grammys)

Who's the second one?

Well it's the Academy's fault for not having any explicit criteria on what defines lead vs supporting so don't hate the studios for playing the game

I doubt they want to move Ariana to main, they want Cynthia to be nominated for main. Idk if they can control where they can go, and have a say in that tbh.

if Zoe gets moved to lead and Ariana stays as a Supporting her chances of winning increases drastically. I think that's what they're trying.

Despite what Variety predicted yesterday Zoe is still clearly the front-runner for a win, it's not Ariana. Zoe is in 100% of the predictions (both Editors and Experts on Goldderby).

If she gets moved to lead the race would change drastically.

I think selenators are loving Zoe rn since they're campaigning together and Zoe has been nothing but amazing with us but this would also probably increase Selena's chances to be nominated for example.

I don't think any of this is happening, but this has been such an interesting race. Never thought i would be so entertained by my fave's acting career.

At this point, it's been very obvious that Variety is on a payroll and is trying to maneuver and get Wicked into the awards conversation... but this is so low level... why not write a piece about all the other actresses and actors?

Erm, Glinda is just as much a lead role...

And there's Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the lambs who's considered lead in spite of limited screentime due to his looming shadow throughout the movie.

Variety are blatantly in Ariana's pockets. This film is shaping up to be the Oscar villain of the season.

Could we say that this film is shaping up to be … wicked?

Zoe is clearly LEAD in the film.

If she dies move to lead, I'm predicting her to win.

Not the first time Variety's been shady

They are just making predictions. The Oscars will decide the final placements

Either way Ariana getting a nomination is already a win
