Almodusa Posted November 3 Posted November 3 70 years ago, the world was introduced to the King of the Monsters, Godzilla. On November 3rd, 1954, Gojira was released in Japan, spawning nearly 40 Japanese and American films about the iconic kaiju. Released just under a decade after the atomic bombs were used, Godzilla represented the horrors of war, nuclear weaponry, and lack of government guidance in times of disaster. In the 7 decades since, Godzilla has become a pop culture icon around the world, with his silhouette and roar being instantly recognizable. The music by Akira Ifukube became a beast on its own with his triumphant and looming score. The franchise also brought in different kaiju like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to new heights. Despite a dip in popularity as the 21st century commenced, the franchised regained recognition in the past decade thanks to newer films by Toho Co. Ltd. and Legendary Pictures. In 2024, Godzilla Minus One made history by becoming the first in the franchise to win an Academy Award - just in time for its 70th anniversary. 1
