to mark the huge run of London shows wrapping up, members of the Liberal Democrats have put forward the idea that the singer be granted one of the most prestigious awards in the city.

Presented on rare occasions, the award recognises outstanding achievements of an individual in their respective fields.

In their pitch, the Lib Dems highlighted the large-scale charity work of the pop star, including her donations to food banks in every UK city in which she performed. Treasury spokesperson for the party, Sarah Olney, described Swift as showcasing "endless philanthropy and using her platform to bring reforms to the music industry

If granted, Swift wouldn't be the first musician to be a recipient of the award. Back in 2022, Ed Sheeran was also granted the honour. Others who have received it include footballers Ian Wright and Harry Kane, theatre entrepreneur Sir Howard Panter and more.

This would also give her the right to drive sheep over London Bridge or Southwark Bridge - an annual tradition which usually takes place at the end of September.

Slight correction: it's not really "the UK" in discussions, it's the Liberal Democrats the third party in Parliament ( with about 72 seats from memory- out of 650) making a proposal.

As they are not the Government ( which is the Labour Party with about 420 seats) they can propose anything they like, it's just got a snowball's chance in hell of happening unless the Government agrees.  So that's the bit to look out for- what does the Government think, not the Liberal Democrats.

It's not actually up to the government either way, as per the article

Swift would need to be nominated by two elected Members of the City of London Corporation or two members of a City livery company to receive the Freedom Award.

I just said the UK in the title to fit the character limit

Ok fair enough. It's actually the arcane Byzantine workings of things like livery company members that can propose (all very medieval and ceremonial) not the U.K. govt ( things I learned today!).

But it's still just some opposition politician sounding off at this point not active discussions.

The City of London is not part of the UK, and in theory the Liberal Democrat Party should have no influence over it whatsoever. I think it's just a publicity stunt for them to get in the news.

Obviously though it would be really cool if Taylor could get it though. I think she could easily if she really wanted to.
