ultrablue Posted August 21 Posted August 21 They all use the same aesthetics, it's all just varying degrees of the same thing. Doja will outlast them because she actually has a vision and is original. 2

But Doja is too polarizing and JT is fresh off of her Arby's parking lot tour Latto is talented but can't make good songs, Meg can make a good song, but has yet to put out a solid, definitive body of work Ice is too busy trying to sing about poop and farts and Sexyy Red is... Latto actually has some great songs. She needs to broaden her range of rap subjects ASAP though The girls dont have an OG to school them because the only truly successful female rap OG is Nicki. ariesgroove Posted August 21 Posted August 21 there are a lot of factors tying into this but i feel like streaming has had a huge effect on album sales in general tbh

theweekend Posted August 21 Posted August 21 well, time to point the low sales of their male counterparts too but I fear they're too invested on shading women
punisher Posted August 21 Posted August 21 a lot of them are bigger celebrities than they are musicians its all lowkey an illusion 2

Straight men are still by far the largest consumers of rap music and they are not streaming any of these girls, lbr. Cardi was probably the last one with mass mainstream appeal that had a good balance of women, gays, straight men locked in..she fumbled so hard man. the only real correct answer. another important point is that most of them started 'blowing up' in 2019/2020 and with pandemic they couldn't tour while getting hits, they ALL need touring to create a fanbase that will keep buying their albums. Doja, Megan and Latto just have done their first tours (still touring or announced), cardi has never toured. THIS is a huge point the article is missing, most of male rappers who are doing numbers had already a bigger career during the 10's but the ones that blowed up around the same time as the new female rappers are struggling even harder than them. 1

Are we going to call Mariah a Whitney clone now too as they were doing the same thing when she arrived? Be serious now. There's no logic to this discussion, so I won't waste my time. 1
dooart Posted August 21 Posted August 21 surprised to see Latto move more units in her debut week than Ice Spice... Really surprised to see Megan moved only 8k units less than Doja, and y'all treat Megan like she's a major flop or whatever... I think Megan could move +100k units/week if she's had a proper album cycle without being sabotaged by her own label. I believe that if she was not independent this time around she would've moved +100k units.

Doja ends up selling more in the long run. Thats why I don't like that they only call out first week sales in the article. There's a lot of other weeks that are missing, that tell a different story… Also, Doja had a departure from her usual style with Scarlet. So it's kinda a fluke. The others are more or less doing what they've always done (just being honest). Signs point to her returning to same producers for DC5, so she'll prob be right back on track next era. 3 1

Doja has craaaazy longevity and while the others evolve their sound and etc, Doja is the only one that changed things up. I'm only now knowing about her returning to her same producers for DC5 (hopefully not THAT MAN tho...). I really liked Scarlet but there's some songs there i had enough way too soon, unfortunately these days i only listen to some of them. Scarlet 2 tho... that's IT for me.

This is commonly known stuff among pop stans from that generation.
