itshyolee Posted August 4 Posted August 4 2ND GEN MOTHERS Yesterday I saw one of their CDs at my local record store and had to buy it 6
Sheep Posted August 4 Posted August 4 pasting this novel I wrote from the kpop base because its relevant to the occasion All trolling and unserious superlatives aside, it's hard on a day like today not to appreciate the enormous impact that SNSD had on the course of music history. SM took so many risks with this group and the women faced a lot of adversity on their way to the top and these things would end up completely upsetting the balance of the global music industry. There was a solid decade without any truly globally famous girl groups before Gee took off. The maximalist, genre-bending music paired with simple but punchy visuals was not unique to soshi at all, not even within 2nd gen, but once they gave that concept a global platform, it became the blueprint for a new wave of girl groups all around the world and indirectly spawned some of the biggest names of the 2010s from non-Asian countries. The lineup was an enormous risk, Sooyoung being a previously failed idol(in a different market no less) was not a typical casting choice for kpop groups at the time and would not become truly normalized until 4th gen. Tiffany and Jessica were not the first foreign members in a Korean idol group(not even the first from SM), but Jessica was the first foreigner to be positioned as a key member of a major group. It's hard to imagine 3rd gen without this, all 3 of the GG trio had key members who did not exclusively identify as Korean(or as Korean at all). Those 2 tanked a LOT of hate for their language skills and struggle to overcome cultural differences so that your favs could all debut without much discourse from anybody except the most extreme xenophobes. BoA and DBSK were huge in Japan, even bigger than SNSD at their peaks, but both had to make massive changes to their image and sound, with Boa even trying to appear as a Japanese idol early on. SNSD brought their same concepts and songs to Japan with them and got a million seller album out of it during the all-time low for idol group sales. Nobody takes the reinvent yourself for Japan route anymore, it's all exclusively the SJJD route of bringing the exact same sounds/concepts to a foreign country with a mix of old and new material and still making it huge. SNSD's US venture is remembered by 3rd and 4th gen fans as an abject failure, but without the networking Lee Sooman did(even purchasing a home and commercial space in Los Angeles to concentrate on doing such and appear legit to all these boring rich white hollywood execs), we would have never got SNSD signed to Interscope or collaborating with TOP American talent like Teddy Riley, Snoop Dogg, and Harvey Mason Jr.(the now president of the recording academy, make the connections to their recent embrace of Korean music yourself). This immediately caused an industry frenzy which is still going to this day, where HUGE American artists and corporations want a piece of the kpop pie. SMTown's 2011 Madison Square Garden concert was a milestone for the kpop touring industry, it was the FIRST kpop show in the world's largest touring market done in collaboration with Live Nation, who runs an effective duopoly on that industry at the highest level globally. That concert featured ALL of SM's lineup at that point, and the documentary made about the historic occasion does a lot to give Boa the credit for the success, but the fancams and uploads of the dvd don't lie, that was an SNSD concert with a bunch of special guests. Without SNSD, Kpop doesn't make it to the level its at today with top Korean acts pulling per show numbers that DEMOLISH English speaking acts with similar streams. This era wasn't even their only groundbreaking US success though, TTS was the FIRST Korean girl group to chart on the BB200. Their highly publicized sweep at the first and only Youtube Music Awards(which had them winning against Gaga and Bieber, the former of which was not only in attendance but also a performer) was clearly the direct inspiration for BTS's strategy in cornering the US market through extremely high profile appearances that put them next to and painted them as more popular than western acts. When Jessica was removed, the popular sentiment was that SNSD would massively decline, Wonder Girls are tremendous legends and talents in their own right, and lineup issues very quickly took them from being at or above SNSD and 2NE1's level early on, to on the verge of disbandment for most of their run. TVXQ was experiencing their freefall from relevancy in Korea at the time of her departure. It was unheard of in kpop(or anywhere else that I'm aware of) for a pop group to lose one of its most popular members/main vocalists and stay popular, let alone reaching higher heights like SNSD did. When an idol group loses a key member now, nobody outside of stans moves. When Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun left SM entertainment and ALL parties maintained that they were still members of Girls' Generation, it was seen as media play, only the most delusive Sones(hihi) were still holding out hope for comebacks and live shows with all 8 members by the time Forever 1 came around. Forever 1 obviously wasn't as big as an aespa or Black Pink project, but it was still hugely successful with career-best debut sales in spite of stock issues and a local moderate hit. Immediately following this, the members of several of the biggest groups ever signed similar deals that separated solo and group activities. All of this while maintaining a reputation of being exceptionally talented, beautiful, hardworking, and NEVER leaving the conversation as one of the top idol groups in an ever-splintering industry dominated by fads who come and go like nothing ever happened. SNSD is the blueprint for what it means to be a girl group in the modern era, what it means to be a Korean music artist breaking into the #1 and #2 music markets, and on top of setting an unreachable example, are gracious mentors who give their juniors nothing but kindness with their unpaid and notoriously smart career advice. You literally cannot overstate their impact on kpop. 5 3
