Olympic athlete hospitalized after swimming in France's Seine River, team withdraws

Belgium's Olympic triathlon team has withdrawn from the mixed relay race in protest after teammate Claire Michel was hospitalized with E.coli after swimming in the Seine.

According to Dutch media outlet De Standaard, Michel tested positive for E-coli bacteria following her participation in the women's triathlon on July 31. Her condition has sparked outrage over the unsanitary conditions of Paris' Seine River, where distance swimming events for the 2024 Olympics have been held.

Monday's event was also affected by the delays and cancellations that marathon swimming fans and competitors have become all too familiar with. A planned familiarization swim for the relay competition was called off due to anticipated poor water quality.

This cancellation follows a similar situation for the individual event on July 28, and the postponement of the men's triathlon from Monday to Tuesday. While Michel is the first publicly known hospitalization among swimmers or triathletes, the cleanliness of Paris' main waterway has been under intense scrutiny in the lead-up to this summer's Olympic Games.

Don't they have another lake or something similar in a nearby city where they can host these events? This is such an embarrassment

This year's Olympics have been beyond messy. Giving the Brazilian one from a few years ago a run for its money. :toofunny3:

Oh wow I'm so shocked

They don't have enough money to clean that river? wtf

why would you swim in a paris river? :psyduck:

It's beyond sad that they are risking the health of athletes for this little 'prestige project'. Instead of holding the swimming/triathlon/etc. contests in one of the many clean and safe facilities there are all over France they just had to do it in the Seine, no matter what.

Ryan Lotche's make-believe robbery for starters :rip: He fled the country and never paid any consequences for lying and wasting the time and money of the Brazilian police force.

its not even like we got a good view of paris from the river, the waterline is so low and the camera was above them, would have been a better view at a cleaner river in the coutryside somewhere rather than a dirty brown city river

It was so weird how this went.

For weeks on weeks they couldn't get the watered cleared, but right before the Olympics it got cleared.....

Well Mary Good luck with that.

I hope your little intestines survive!
