It shouldn't matter tbh, I know for a fact that my fave (Beyoncé) would sound immaculate phone recording or not. I just couldn't lower my standards but I guess for some people it may not matter so much if their fave singer can sing. 7
BrokenMachine Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Maybe the real variants are the friends we made along the way

I know fans love to say this is industry standard now (which is true to some extent) but I feel like most other artists drop deluxes or target certain weeks if they play the game? Not new copies every week ad nauseam There are two prominent examples from what I recall. First one was Lil Nas X during "Old Town Road" 's record-breaking 19-week run at #1. In addition to the remix with Billy Ray Cyrus which became the definitive version of the song, Lil Nas X also dropped remixes with Diplo, Young Thug + Mason Ramsey (the kid who had gone viral for yodelling at Walmart), and RM of BTS. Most notably, the Diplo remix was released to further extend the song's gap against Taylor Swift's "ME!" - its strongest contender. The other two were released later in its run when it was nearing "One Sweet Day" 's 16-week record. However, Lil Nas X was a complete newcomer and a certified troll at that. Not to mention the song was already genuinely megaviral and achieving insanely strong streams. The second case is BTS' "Butter", where their label was actively pushing for the three main remixes ('Hotter', 'Sweeter', 'Cooler') the two weeks following the song's #1 debut, then lots of physical releases, a remix with Megan Thee Stallion that allowed it to return to #1 for a 10th week, and also a 'Holiday' remix in December for good measure. These tactics paired with the organized mass support + sales from the ARMY led to immense backlash in chart watching + stan communities, with "Butter" 's success being deemed as inorganic and fraudulent by many. Billboard directly confronted the members about it during an interview and it ultimately led to the sales-related rules changing on the Hot 100. But otherwise, nobody else resorted to this level of regular investment and variant push to keep hogging up the #1 spot. You may recall that Taylor was also pulling similar antics during "Midnights" and "Anti-Hero" 's chart runs (to dethrone SZA on the albums chart and to block Rihanna and Drake/21 Savage) 1

Moonlight Nation Posted August 3 Posted August 3 But hey, looking on the bright side of things, Taylor's team finally used the best picture from that photoshoot as a cover. Took them long enough. Shame the title couldn't be rearranged to the upper left side of the shot, because this editing looks so amateurish. Either way, massive improvement from all the vinyl variant covers, being a significantly more flattering and natural shot of Taylor and which matches the mood of the album better. 2 1
єѕℓαм Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Well this time it's actually justified cos she's tryna block Kanye and i'm not mad at it and it's hilarious how some stans don't know the difference between Hot 100 & Billboard 200

Not new copies every week ad nauseam Who was the last artist to have that type of demand to block new albums 10 weeks after release tho? Adele with 25? Drake with Scorpion? Only one i can remember is Morgan from the recent years so we probably won't have any answer to that Edited August 3 by WildHeart 1
The Pop Hub Posted August 3 Posted August 3 If it's to block someone who is antisemitic all I can do is applaud to be honest 1 2
Kristie Kuwa Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Its crazy that Billboard havent started going against that scam.
Tylerbv Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I hate her, but I hate Kanye more so release 10 more variants, queen 1

Even when the variants are way too annoying and useless, it's just another way to boost sales and doesn't go against any rule (and there are already way too many rules to 'prevent' manipulation but oh well), if they stopped to count variants, it would harm every single artist since every one uses them, Taylor is just the one that excels at it. 1

So just Taylor then? Good. Someone needs to end her tyranny! The chart isnt a pin to stick in her voodoo dolls at her whim.
