Alldeezy Posted July 30 Posted July 30 no making your own series better than any netflix show with the sims 2 is a hobby 1
HonourableVomit Posted July 30 Posted July 30 If you ENGAGE with it, discuss the media with other people, take part in a community around it. Mindlessly consuming something while sitting on your phone as it plays in the background, definitely not. 13 1
spree Posted July 30 Posted July 30 I think a hobby is more than just staring at something. Hobbies are productive. Just staring at a TV isn't productive. 5 1
Park Jinyoung Posted July 30 Posted July 30 Is it really a hobby if you don't engage with it? My dad actively watches Netflix every day and he seriously couldn't tell you anything about something he watched more than two weeks ago. He never remembers the titles, much less cares who directed what, the actors, anything like that. If he recognizes an actor's face he'll watch it but then it just goes in and out. That's not a hobby to me.
BGKC Posted July 30 Posted July 30 (edited) I guess. Especially if they're certified critics. Some people dedicate their social medias to recommending good shows/movies to watch (as well as criticizing them). Some people are also really into certain genres. Like I know a guy whose entire personality is horror films. He's able to recommend in detail what he thinks the best horror series/movies on Netflix are. I'd consider that to be a hobby of his. Gladiator Posted July 30 Posted July 30 (edited) I voted no, but I don't think it's always no. I think if you actually engage with what you're watching, like discussing it, etc., then it can be considered a hobby. But if you are just passively watching Netflix then I don't really think it is a hobby. I do think the majority of people who consume Netflix watch it passively for the most part as just something to watch and kill time. If you are doing something just to kill time, then I don't think that is a hobby. Edited July 30 by Gladiator
kimberly Posted July 30 Posted July 30 yes -- with a caveat. much like reading, listening to music, attending a concert or play, watching TV shows and movies IS indeed a hobby. I don't get this recent online debate about "consuming media" not counting as a hobby. that's like saying traveling isn't a hobby because you didn't fly the plane. I wouldn't consider "mindless viewing" a hobby, though. if Netflix is your ambient background noise, then it's not something you're getting much value out of.
Gesamtkunstwerk Posted July 30 Posted July 30 (edited) If you're for some reason fascinated with Netflix series and engage in it, yes If you're just binging Friends for the 5th time while scrolling your phone, no Edited July 30 by Gesamtkunstwerk 1

Bencharmer Posted July 31 Posted July 31 (edited) This is sad we arrived at a time when watching series and movies are become "questionnable hobbies" and Netflix a "non productive action." When you watch a series/a movie, you witness the work of a lot of persons : script-writters, actors, art directors... They all worked very hard for you to watch this 40 minute long episode. Imagine all the effort they put to make you live an experience. Enjoying all that work, getting into a vision and make you follow a story wouldn't be an hobby? Sad world. Edited July 31 by Bencharmer
LittleStarmen Posted July 31 Posted July 31 No becuse hobbies are things you DO... active things Netflix you consume entertaiment just like food or social media But if you cook its a hobby for example

Goaty Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Yes, it's a hobby. Even the most passive, mindless watch of TV is technically a hobby. Not a very good one, I'd say, but a hobby nonetheless.
popmusicisdead Posted August 1 Posted August 1 nah. Netflix is what you put on the background while you're doing your actual hobby
