Lady Gaga's dazzling performance of Zizi Jeanmaire's "Mon Truc en Plumes" set the irreverent tone of the Olympics' opening ceremony. But it nearly got called off due to the rain, says Maud le Pladec, the choreographer of all Olympics and Paralympics ceremonies who worked with Gaga for many months.

Le Pladec, who worked closely with the Olympics' ceremonies artistic director Thomas Jolly, revealed that Gaga's performance had to be filmed hours before festivities started for safety reasons; nevertheless, she still sang live.
 

For the first time in modern history, the ceremony took place outside a stadium. Gaga's performance was one of 12 created for the occasion, and while it ran "only four minutes," Le Pladec says it was the "most artistically challenging" number of all.
 

"Unfortunately, it was the only performance that, for safety reasons, we had to pre-record late in the afternoon, once we knew for sure that it was going to rain. We assessed that it was going to be too dangerous for performers, even with a few drops of rains. Gaga wanted to do it absolutely so we preferred to pre-record it rather than cancel it," she says.
 

There were plenty of reasons it wouldn't have worked in the bad weather. "The soil would have been slippery. She was wearing heels, very near the water, there were stairs… We had to be extremely cautious," Le Pladec said. Representatives for Gaga declined to comment.

While she couldn't perform during the ceremony, Gaga was on site during the show. She watched her musical number on screen from her dressing room before returning to her hotel

She puts so much effort and thought into everything she does and she has a very developed creative process."

I mean, her performance had choreography (complete with lifts), stairs, feathers, and a tiny stage to work with. One dancer still slipped and fell on stage as is. It was extremely obvious to anyone with a brain why pre-recording it was the best and safest decision in an inclement weather but people need something to be mad about.

 

I'm just glad she was able to perform as envisioned and deliver a fantastic performance without anyone seriously getting hurt.

They should have filmed it in the dark tbh. I saw a video of the rehearsals on my timeline and I believe it would have served more if it was darker and they had some lights around. But this makes sense, I guess

What about the rest of the hundreds performers who were performing in absolute pouring rain? They managed perfectly fine. The drag queens were walking and dancing down that runway for hours, and dancers on a bout in the river etc. I'm hearing excuses. Miss DIVA didn't wanna do it in the rain.

Someone else already clocked you on the feathers, but the performance also used archival pom poms from a cabaret theater - you can't just let stuff like that be out in the rain when it's not yours

They are also performing on the banks of the river and stairs is part of their performance where Gaga was running on high heels.

the Rain On Me singer made the right decision

She made the right decision. She was running up and down those stairs in heels, if she slipped and fell and broke something it could be extremely detrimental to her career and overall health, especially considering her issues. I read organizers wanted to pull the plug completely but she insisted on doing it before the rain and recording it.

 

Yes, there were a lot of other people who performed under the rain but it was Gaga's choice to protect her body and no one can blame her for that.
