Virgos Groove Posted July 26 Posted July 26 (edited) I feel like if you're gonna name a country, you should also specify who they're being racist towards. Because even though all European countries are racist, no country is more racist towards a people than the Romanians are to the Roma. It's like Jim Crow with slight hints of Nazi Germany. Do you have any source for me to get more educated about this? I always see people everywhere being racist to Roma but I feel like it's not talked about, ever, at least not here, it's never mentioned when talking about racism. 1

Sure, here are a few links: Open University Amnesty International Green European Journal I'll add my two cents too. Here in Portugal, the Roma are almost a segregated population. They either live in shanty towns or (shoddy) public housing specifically built to keep them away from white people. There's a stereotype that they're all unemployed and living off the state - which is untrue -, but the truth is no one will employ them. Most don't finish high school and only a handful have made it to college, meaning the chances of social mobility are near zero. Centuries of discrimination have made the community really distrustful of institutions. Plus, when the state tries to allow Roma children into public schools, things tend to get really ugly, with white parents throwing a fit. Things are beginning to improve tho, with employers finally starting to allow Roma wokers and more Roma children going to school and college. But there's still a long way to go. "Cigano", which is how the community is called in Portugal, is still a word that is imbued into children to mean "bad, evil, thief, etc.". And there's been the rise of Chega, a far-right party that has scapegoated Roma people as "everything that's wrong with the country". If you're interested, one of our newspapers did a series of pieces on our Roma community; their history, current situation, challenges, etc. It's still very much a taboo topic in this country. 8 1

Thank you so much! I'm going to go through all of that. The situation is pretty much the same in Italy, although I must admit I don't know much about it beyond what I see with my own eyes. And sadly that's just them being indeed at the margins of society, begging for money on the streets and browsing in trash cans, which is so sad. I know that there are some communities here too, where they live in tents. I have never had a kid in my school nor met any of them in a context which wasn't the streets. What a sad reality that nobody seems to care about. 1
Maroonx Posted July 27 Posted July 27 the way the OP listed Mexico in NA, and "idk" in Africa is sending me... South Africa had racial segregation until the early 90s... 2
Bosque Posted July 27 Posted July 27 How would anyone know unless you have lived in like a dozen countries, and been or gotten to know minorities in all of them
