Basically this. Argentina has a lot of issues but it is one of the most advanced countries in all things diversity, leading the region in immigration and LGBTQ+ legislation and has always been: In fact the reason why there are not many dark skinned people in the country, contrary to the historically and scientifically inaccurate genocide narrative that's being pushed the last couple years, is that Argentina abolished slavery in 1812 (50 years before USA and 75 years before Brazil) so enslaved Africans stopped being forced into the country over 200 years ago and the liberated slaves were assimilated and eventually mixed with Criollos.

As for the chant, I hated it from day one and I still think it is disgusting, but these type of chants are sadly very typical because it is just part of the country folklore. What matter though is that it doesn't really have a reflection in society, you can tell someone a slur as a joke and then grab a beer immediately after and nobody will be mad because you can spot the intentionality in the word. I rather live in a country where you can be teased for whatever rather than one that gets inflammated by a joke but has dark

skinned people shot at or suffocated to death, where gestating people cannot abort or the LGBT community doesn't have the same marriage conditions than heterosexual partners.

omg that's not true how do i report as fake news?

Oh god... they are coming for you for spilling the truth.

It's a witch hunt here for speaking the truth and providing facts. :WAP:

I'm not choosing sides and I'm not looking for a fight, but honestly, how do you justify saying "Argentina is one of the most progressive countries in the world" when you guys just elected Javier Milei?

Milei did not come into power due to social campaigning, he is the result of a 15 years spawning economic crisis caused by left wing policies of the Maduro/Putin allied party that his contender in the election was part of. People voted for him out of desperation for the economy and assuming all social rights will be defended by the senate and the Supreme Court, so they prioritized the turn around of the country's financials.

Sorry I'm from Latin America and racism is a crime in my country so it's hard to wrap my head around it being just "playful fun". Especially coming from a country that's allegedly "one of the most advanced countries regarding diversity" according to your post.

And oof, "contrary to the historically and scientifically inaccurate genocide narrative". That's one hell of sentence! :jonnycat:

Ugh it's so fun to see people defend European countries when they are the sole cause third world countries can't develop (and they keep exploiting them with modern tools and media manipulation)

Never change ATRL

It's sad that they don't see the endless pit they're getting into. Unfortunately, in Brazil, we had to endure four years under a government like Bolsonaro's to understand the true face of the far-right. Milei manages to be even WORSE than Bolsonaro (if that's possible), but at the same time, both represent the overall face of the nation they lead.

And I'm sorry, but those who leave Brazil to study in Argentina are seen as a joke here, since we have plenty of spots in public and private universities. It's not like people leave Brazil because there is no higher education; they just can't get in. :nicole:

No offense but I would rather pay a small fee to study in Buenos Aires than live and study in São Paulo for free :deadbanana4:

There are racists in every country but only some countries invest in the quality of their cities, and it seems like Argentina is one of the few that actually cares about that.

Same. São Paulo is really bad. Luckily, Brazil is a huge country, of continental dimensions, with diverse cultures and wonderful places. And yes, there are racists everywhere, unfortunately many of them are in Argentina. :rip:

It is not. I'm SO sorry that you feel threatened about discussing other forms of systematic discrimination aside from the one generated towards afro-descendants

Also, should we consider in this conversation the difference "afroamericans" do between them and afrolatinxs? Because that happens, A LOT.

ATRL is not ready for this conversation. It's better to stick to Woman's world underperforming or sth like that.

It's crazy how youre all over this thread trying to claim intellectual superiority when you're just flat out wrong :rip:. It's a known fact Argentina is racist. They flat out annihilated their black population. Your literal PRESIDENT stated that he wanted its legacy to be a "civilized" country and that they would have to go to Brazil if they wanted to see black people.

About the Afro-American and Afro-Latino dynamic:

1. You're clearly speaking on something you don't have the capacity for as that's not how the relationship works. Afro Latinos have commonly denied their black heritage in favor of their national one. Which is where the "Me no black, Me latino" meme comes from.

2. Mbappe is French. You literally only brought up African-Americans because you wanted to get something off your chest

3. Mad at Mbappe saying one region is better at soccer, when Messi is well documented using racial slurs is wild :bibliahh:

OT: FIFA should ban Argentina :clap3:

Argentina's last president, Alberto Fernandez, literally said that Brazilians are "from the jungle" which is a classic racist stereotype about black people~afrodescendants and then erased Argentina's indigenous heritage by saying "they're from boats, and boats from Europe" :skull:

They try to portray themselves as purely European so badly and the ironic thing is they aren't even the whitest in Latin America.

because he's the result of 20 years of incompetent politicians. Like every outsider, he wins when the population is tired of the same old people promising things that never happen. Don't try to talk about the politics and the society of a country you don't know sh*t.

Are we surprised? Argentina is still considered one of the most racist countries in the world despite years of progress. Majority of darker skin individuals in their films and tv are always villians. Hell, Argentina is where neo Nazis and Nazi from WW2 run to when they want refuge or to retire. There is a reason when you here someone say I want to retire in Argentina or Ukraine, you should be on edge.

Hell, they got aggressive skin bleaching ads that run all the time, there are literal documentaries that showcase the racism and colourism in full force. I'm in Barbados and the fact that girls look at you strange, when you say are going to study in Argentina should tell you something.
