Taylor's entire character & marketing is centered around writing these very mundane feelings with a diaristic approach in song format, she has mass-appel, something that "academically" better songwriters usually lack. 

 

Nobody in their right mind will come here and say stuff like "Taylor is a better songwriter than Kate Bush or Fiona Apple", but from a global perspective, most people outside very specific music niches don't know anything about these "better" songwriters so they pick the most recognizable that made it into the mainstream sphere and has maintained a 17 years long career in the mainstream sphere. 

Not to mention being a great songwriter isn't just being able to create abstract art, it's also being able to create on a level that connects with swaths of humanity. The Beatles weren't revered for creating inaccessible art — they were memorialized for their universally recognized proficiency in lyricism and musical composition. Being a great songwriter is just as much about evolving as it is about remaining grounded.
 

The artistic writers that live with their head in the clouds have admitted that they struggle with writing commercially accessible music. Taylor can float back and forth between two spaces while most writers can only occupy one. Madonna is another writer that I've mentioned has excelled at this duality in the past. Mariah too. It's the reason they went on to become the biggest female artists of all time, and their legacies remain kind to them.

I think what they mean is that Taylor severely needs an editor, which has been my main issue with her most recent output. Too many songs, too many words, too many ideas in one music video... etc. 

 

She needs more serious collaborators and less "yes men," though I imagine it must be difficult to find anyone who can say no to a person that can catapult their career to the next level or earn them a big check. Taylor has a LOT of gems and golden nuggets in all her albums but I think she always falls back on her bread and butter which is the theme of young love

Even her most acclaimed work even by non-fans, folklore, is mostly famous for its "teenage love triangle" story

Obviously young love is what makes Taylor's music universal and relatable and even my favorite Taylor songs ever are her love ballads  

 

But I'd love to see her make a body of work that completely explores other topics and go out of her comfort zone, even go beyond self-centered (or what's a more neutral word for it) songs like Anti-Hero
