Nor a vocalist :skull:

are you aware that singer-songwriter doesn't mean exceptional vocalist? its used to refer to singers who write their own songs, usually in a stripped back or confessional manner, something that is probably the biggest and most well known part of taylor's brand.

In the real world they just know her as the girl who sings about her exes. Obviously they know she writes them but they don't give that a second thought like here :skull:

Taylor appeals to a much wider audience because she has the singer-songwriter angle as well. I think what's made her so successful is that she combined the super glam, femme, diva pop star of Madonna, Britney etc with the confessional singer-songwriter credibility of an Alanis or Jewel. She has the best of both worlds, and so she appeals to the most amount of people. You get your super pop star fix, but you also get your singer-songwriter fix. Obviously, Madonna and Britney have their singer-songwriter moments, but they never really marketed themselves as that (maybe Madonna during American Life). She's also never marketed herself sexually which I think is quite noteworthy as it marks a real change in what constitutes the #1 female pop star since the days of Britney. Previously when the industry marketed a female pop star being able to 'serve sex' was a big requirement, every other girl that vied for that title had that element, from Katy to Gaga to Rihanna, they all had their sexy videos and performances, but Taylor never did. She kind of single-handedly proved you don't need that anymore and you're seeing it in the younger crop of artists now.

Worth noting Britney could have stuck to the same formula and continued milking it for a couple more eras. She alienated her very young fan base way too quick looking back, singing about being a sex slave by your third era and year was a choice. A bop with a great album nonetheless, but a switcharoo with the quickness

Britney debuted at the height of album sales... The fact that Taylor passed her speaks volume about the gap in their popularity

So did Jessica Simpson so that's not an excuse.

Taylor debuted in 2006 not 2016.

she had an advantage of downloaded albums as people did not have to go to the store but she still did well as physical album sales were still strong for the first 5+ years of her career.

ive said it before and I'll say it again…

Madonna (80s/90s/00s)-Britney (90s/00s/10s)-Taylor (00s/10s/20s)

The white female blonde pop star blueprint is unmatched.

while each were criticized for their limited vocals they still dominated and outsold.

the thing is who will Taylor pass the torch to? Is it Billie or someone else? It's possible she might hold it for another decade.

Madonna, Britney and Taylor really did their thing for their respective eras.

I hope this chart is on YouTube as well.

Britney Spears is the blueprint and her sales are absolutely insane. Not too bad for someone that's called talentless and mediocre by her haters

So did her peers, but only Beyoncé came close to her, so what now?

Like, absolutely no one is gonna care if her sales "lag behind" in whatever metric or tactic they'll be using in the coming years to measure so-called popularity. None of that is gonna erase the fact that she is now seen as a certified legend. The young girls are trying to get to her status, she ain't competing with them. To someone like Beyoncé and other older acts, "variants" are for anniversaries.

Did I say the opposite? You seem angry love. I'm just saying her sales will start to lag behind in the coming years. :rip:

Sure, but that goes without saying. It happens to every veteran act, the older they get in their career. It's natural as the industry moves on to new formats and metrics.

The umbrage I took with your post was that it was "too bad" and then going on to compare her impending "lagging sales" to the likes of Taylor and Billie, 2 women who are not her peers. The latter is young enough to be her daughter.

Not really. She most definitely appeals to a certain demographic.

Pressed OTH foaming at Taylor's variants while dismissing Britney's albums with multiple editions (North American, Asian, Australian, European, Deluxe, etc.).

Everybody does this. Other artists have 15 vinyl variants of the same album and still can't crack 100k vinyl sales. If you don't have demand, you just don't, and you won't sell that many copies.

@LatinFreak why did you give my post a thumbs down?

I thot all of ATRL worships Chartsmasters... and that source is closer to the truth than what that insta video presents.

Let's return to a commonly shared factual based reality. I don't want to live in this dystopian reality of alternative-facts anymore. It's tiring.

This is taking into account Track sales that account as album sales. That are actual sales and not stream based.

It is pure sales. But taking the actual sales of songs as Album equivalent song sales.
