Bitter Aging Twink Posted June 14 Posted June 14 In a recent interview promoting her critically-acclaimed sixth studio album, BRAT, Charli XCX admits that she's "not a very good singer" and needs Autotune "like seriously" in order to record her music. She then goes on to explain that having perfect vocals isn't always necessarily more important than being a good artíste. Thoughts? Starts at 15:13
Popular Post Cruel Summer Posted June 14 Popular Post Posted June 14 Honestly, autotune and vocal processing is such an integral part of the transcendent, futuristic sound she's curated for herself that I can't imagine her work without it, and that's fine. She's right - I mean, it's just a tool to use. Her ability to create brilliant work clearly isn't limited by not being a world-class vocalist and like others she makes up for that by knowing how to use her unique voice and tone well. 51
PrettyHurts Posted June 14 Posted June 14 hmmm that might be where the disconnect with her new album comes for me. charli's lack of vocal ability is distracting to me. there are dance music artists that can sing. 3
PartyFavor Posted June 14 Posted June 14 I don't like her music, but she is correct that you do not need to be a good singer to make good music, especially these days. there's people you go to for overall vibes, and there's people you go to when you want to hear incredible vocals. That's what makes music interesting 11
CherryBay Posted June 14 Posted June 14 We know this is why baffles me how Brat is so high on Metacritics 2 1 1 3
TitanicSurvivor Posted June 14 Posted June 14 (edited) Every one in industry besides Xtina uses auto-tune so there's nothing new Edited June 14 by TitanicSurvivor 7 6
greento Posted June 14 Posted June 14 I've never understood why people care about artists using autotune. I could not care less. Vocals are like the least important part of a song to make me enjoy it. 9 2

Karla Cabello Posted June 14 Posted June 14 i agree with her but some people like @PrettyHurts and my grandma who listened to opera all her life and only wants to listen to classically trained singers will not connect with her music. it is what it is 4
skankle Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Ms Charli may not be a vocalist, but she has a distinct tone with a lot of character and a strong ability to convey emotion 6
Popular Post Venice B Posted June 14 Popular Post Posted June 14 Because art comes in many forms. There are singers who are amazing vocalists and can do amazing things with their voice, but crafting an album, bringing a concept to life etc like she did with brat is also an art form and it takes more than amazing vocals. Both things can coexist. 14 1
mercurialworld Posted June 14 Posted June 14 vocals are just one aspect out of thousands that a song is comprised of, and she's doing fine either way. she's right.
kimberly Posted June 14 Posted June 14 I go to different artists for different things. I'm not listening to a Charli XCX song looking for raw vocal excellence. 3
lgaga1fan Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Charli has an amazingly expressive voice regardless of her classical singing skill. She's created her own lane with it that others can barely touch

Saint James Posted June 14 Posted June 14 she had a chance in her early career to develop her voice but now it's been damaged from her technique and lifestyle. i personally would have preferred her take the Caroline/Imogen route in terms of strong vocal and electronic production, but it is what it is. belting was never incorporated to her songwriting anyway.
blaggot Posted June 14 Posted June 14 charli is the female Jimi Hendrix. she uses autotune like Jimi Hendrix uses the guitar. 3 5

KatyPrismSpirit Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Welp at least she's honest and doesnt make it a taboo. You don't have to be a good singer to make good music
illia Posted June 14 Posted June 14 She easily makes up for it with her creativity and talent of producing and songmaking (idk if this word actually exists but yeah) 2
Draper. Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Knowing your limitations is a good thing. She's got the right references and instincts to make the most out of her abilities, and that's what makes a great artist. I've seen her three times live and two of two of those times she was completely by herself on stage with no props and no dancers, and she was still able to command the stage and completely hype up the crowd. 7
