When you've been set up to lose everything you love,
what is there left to fight for?

A new novel in The Hunger Games franchise, "Sunrise on the Reaping," is slated to be released on March 18, 2025 by Suzanne Collins! The story will take place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen's first Games (and 40 years after "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes"), starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games aka the Second Quarter Quell. Fans will know this as the Hunger Games that Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss's and Peeta's mentor, won.
The film adaptation has been announced for a November 2026 release.

Synopsis:

Quote

As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight ... and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

"They will not use my tears for their entertainment."

– Haymitch Abernathy

I mean, I guess…? Personally I would rather she writes a whole new franchise. This isn't surprising though. I bet you all $5 that soon Stephenie Meyer is going to announce the next Twilight Saga novel.

The lore is there and the possibilities are endless so why not?

I'm not really intrigued by a novel where Haymitch is the lead though. It'd be cool to explore a minor character who wasn't really developed like a Mags, Cashmere, Gloss or Enobaria (those teeth!) or perhaps a story about career tributes

Ehh, the original trilogy is one of my favorite book series with Mockingjay being probably my favorite fiction book. But, this is unnecessary. I’d prefer a new series altogether.

I'm excited for this. I know some people aren't hyped up about the idea of Haymitch's Games because we already know who wins but this will give Suzanne Collins the opportunity to flesh out and explore other characters in those Games. Plus I'd love to see what District 12 was like between the 10th and 74th Games.

She needs to let it go. The trilogy was absolutely amazing, but the fourth one was such a disappointment and despite being long, the ending felt completely rushed. I get she has good ideas for her world, but she's taking an extremely good story and bloating it

I think this is a great story to tell and clearly they want this so it can be another movie. I'm reading and I'm seated.

Well the host and chemist had nowhere near the impact for Meyer so it'd make sense

Collins wants to keep taking it in esp with a film presumably

Yep. If they plan on doing a movie for this one eventually the amount of budget that will go out in casting alone for 48 tributes, even if many of them will just be extras/ D-Z list actors that's a lot of people.

There's going to be a SOTR announcement on the Today Show tomorrow. Many think that it'll either be the cover art reveal, a synopsis, or both :duca:

On the cover:

"The spiky sun rises on a symbol that will come to mean a lot to Haymitch Abernathy, as well as countless readers," David Levithan, vice president, publisher and editorial director for Scholastic, said in a statement to TODAY. "Artist Tim O'Brien has created yet another iconic 'Hunger Games' cover — this one symbolically exploring one of the central themes of the series: how conflicting forces can be connected by their common nature, the songbird and the snake springing from the same source."

"They will not use my tears for their entertainment."

– Haymitch Abernathy

Suzanne knows what she's doing. If she thinks there's something in the story worth telling despite us already knowing the outcome, I trust her :clap3:

Scholastic's website states it's 400 pages, making it the 2nd longest in the franchise by a small margin. The books in the trilogy have around 10-25 pages less, while the first prequel has over 500.
