Romova99 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 He always say this once in a while... we need the male Girls Aloud band, a new gay pop band. 1
babycomeround Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Simon has always behind the curve and got very lucky with 1D - that kind of thing cannot be recreated. When you look at 1D's single chart positions - it was mostly social media and the fanbase driving it hence why they could have #1 albums and sell out stadiums. They didn't have as many mega WW hits as they should've for a band of their magnitude and that's because of Syco half-arsing it and doing things on the cheap as always. He tried to create the new Spice Girls with Girl Thing, with an expensive launch at the Eiffel Tower, and they flopped into oblivion. He needs to stick to dreary boybands like Westlife who can sell albums on Mother's Day and his tacky reality tv shows.
Shelter Posted June 4 Posted June 4 They really should've done a talent comp to create one and a girl group.
alexrex Posted June 4 Posted June 4 It's ok Grandpa Cowell, your time has passed. X Factor, all those shows are part or the past. Let the new generation do their own thing.
Trent W Posted June 4 Posted June 4 That's just unrealistic Gen alpha is so different they need that market to launch and the kids dgaf about boy bands

SimpleKindofLife Posted June 4 Posted June 4 The amount of artists ruined or stalled by Syco still makes me mad 2
Bloodflowers. Posted June 4 Posted June 4 I want girl groups as well! There is always market for boy groups and girl groups
LovingDays Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Meh. Call me when they do something that is even half as iconic as *NSYNC.
uusagii Posted June 4 Posted June 4 His band better be exceptional because those K-pop kids and their masters do be knowing how to snatch up fans
More Than A Melody Posted June 4 Posted June 4 1 hour ago, Josh said: Dynamite is bigger than any act produced by Simon Cowell BTS accomplished a lot and they're massive in the Asian market, but aside from some inflated numbers they're really not that big in the West. They had one residency tour in America where they performed 8 isolated stadium concerts (Vegas and Cali), and other than that they have not performed in any venue bigger than an arena in the West. One Direction had four US headlining tours, two of which were in Stadiums. They also toured stadiums in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Asia, and even Africa, which very few acts manage to dominate. Total album sales per country: US BTS: 5,610,000 1D: 8,045,000 Canada BTS: 343,500 1D: 1,015,000 Latin America BTS: 1,232,000 (no sales discriminated by country) 1D: 2,360,000 (Argentina 555,000. Brazil 825,000. Mexico 980,000) Australia BTS: 214,500 1D: 1,030,000 UK BTS: 532,500 1D: 4,070,000 France BTS: 544,000 1D: 720,000 Germany BTS: 645,000 1D: 455,000 Italy BTS: 171,100 1D: 655,000 Spain: BTS: 106,400 1D: 385,000 Netherlands BTS: 84,450 1D: 205,000 Sweden BTS: 15,420 1D: 115,000 Switzerland BTS: 77,200 1D: 75,000 Austria BTS: 86,700 1D: 55,000 Finland BTS: 8,660 1D: 85,000 Global sales (excluding Asia): BTS: 11,132,500 1D: 21,610,000 One Direction had 5 studio albums released between November 2011 and November 2015. BTS has released 6 EPs and 9 studio albums, the first one of which came out September 2013, making the disparity in numbers in favor of 1D that much more apparent. BTS has a huge fanbase and the success they achieved is certainly commendable considering how hard it is to break the West for an Asian group, but it comes nowhere near the 1D hysteria that existed in the West while the band was active. They are DEFINITELY not bigger than 1D in that regard, and it's unlikely any new band will be considering how polarized pop culture is nowadays. That said, no one can argue that any other boyband has come even close to dominating the Asian market as much as BTS did (does) and of course that will impact the overall perception of what boyband is bigger. If you look at numbers exclusively, BTS' domination over the Asian market makes them the biggest boyband in the world, because... Asia is part of the world. But that doesn't really matter for music moguls in the West, because they care primarily about the Western market. And to that regard, no, BTS wasn't bigger, and no boyband has come close to 1D. And yeah, no boyband will be. Simon has tried countless times and it's just not working. 1D had very unique circumstances surrounding it that I don't see repeating anytime soon. 4

This is so true. 1D was a hit despite Simon, not because of him. And I don't think he has grasped that yet. Columbia aside, which was a good label, but was only doing distribution in the US, the team that managed them was horrible. They had Modest as a management company and Simon Jones as a PR company, two uknown companies who only got X Factor acts on their roster. Their go-to for press releases was the f*cking Sun, and then towards the end they had a leak in it (presumably because Simon Jones had a falling out with Dan Wootton) in which it came out months in advance that they were disbanding, The Sun also had headlines saying Zayn was a drug addict when he was still in the band, and had allll the tea about a falling out Harry and Louis had, which they tried to vehemently deny only to have every word of it become true in the next decade. Modest was always targeted by conspiracy theorists for being so controlling and whatnot, but aside from that idiocy, if you actually look at the way they handled 1D, what you realize is that they were in over their heads. They had no clue what to do with such a big act, they had no personnel, no contacts, no idea what the handbook for the biggest band of the planet was. Syco was terrible. As you mention, they could've had so many hits, and yet their numbers were terrible. How are you telling me 1D never had a radio #1, let alone a Billboard #1. Like, how can that be POSSIBLE? Niall and Liam managed radio #1s with their first few releases. Not even What Makes You Beautiful made it. Harry networked his ass off in 1D and landed pretty good deals with pretty good team members, which is why he managed to escape the black hole that is 1D in terms of individuality. 1
itsmee Posted June 4 Posted June 4 (edited) I think the nxt big thing would be a "organic" boy band packed as a rock band like an act that gives the illusion of not being manufactured and more carefree and free Edited June 4 by itsmee 1
Asscatchem Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Nicole Scherzinger created 1D so I don't know what he's going on about.
Afterglow Posted June 4 Posted June 4 (edited) Western audiences dont care about boyband culture anymore. Its just how it is. Millennials are keeping the last few alive, and just barely. Nobody even cared about an Nsync reunion. 1D likely was the last one, Gen Z doesn't seem to care and the general public doesn't either. Its more about solo artists and maybe a girl group because of the gays. Edited June 4 by Afterglow
Spicy_TyTy Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Can the One Direction boys go viral and post a "Don't Do It". Yes, they became superstars and made plenty of money from it but both 1D and Fifth Harmony have been very honest about the trauma that comes with it.
