Plenty of artists have published non-fiction autobiographies, cooking books etc., and while there's nothing wrong with that, they tend to be ghostwritten and don't really showcase one's abilities as an author. Fiction books are a different beast, and I'd say that being able to write one should be considered a separate talent, though, of course, being able to write a GOOD book is more of an achievement. For example, I was surprised to find out that Simon Curtis (famous in certain circles for his albums 8Bit Heart and R∆) wrote a novel titled Boy Robot that deals with the topic of oppression in general (the main characters, who are androids, are hunted down by the government) and homophobia/transphobia in particular. It wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but it was a decent story. I also remember Lights, a Canadian artist, writing and illustrating a comic book by herself, which should also count.

Sure, I did recall her writing something (outside of SEX and other non-fiction stuff), but I couldn't put a name on it, and her wiki page doesn't have a bibliography section, even though children's books are nothing to scoff at. She should write more!
