In considering this question, and Tate in general, I'm reminded of Edina's comment to Saffy in AbFab:

 

"Just your old mother clutching at straws. Trying to find one exotic, interesting feature about you, but there we are."

1. better music with undeniable hits (greedy was the only standout on her bland album)

2. clearer brand (weirdly constructed sports-themed outfits and dance breaks aren't enough)

 

basically, she needs a cohesive "body of work" album that doesn't sound desperately trend-chasing but still broad and loaded with smashes (like a future nostalgia, sour, etc). easier said than done of course.

she's Canadian

She's doing just fine and is on the right track… she's already blown up so much this era compared to her last album. Her work ethic and talent is there, and Greedy being so huge put her on the map… big names will want to collab and produce for her, and the label will invest. I definitely THINK LATER on everyone in this thread will be eating their words

I will be honest, she gives nothing but a girl who dances to pop music. She has no gimmick to stand out, like she could just be another white girl from tiktok that release generic dance-pop and got some fame. 

 

So I concur her main problem is she lacks a brand or something identifiable. Zara is the same way and we saw where that got her.

she needs her "Dirrty"

A clearer brand & aesthetics she's too generic. Tyla/Sabrina have a strong brand appeal. Tate relies too much on Tik Tok but even with a huge following, she doesn't use. Think Later era was half assed.

I mean, I'm from Canada where she's treated as the second coming of Britney so I can't say much. She is very much celebrated here and most of us have been following her career for years. 

 

She almost has too much kitsch. Some of my friends know her as an amazing dancer that doesn't sing live during potent parts of her songs.

I don't agree with any of this and I'm also Canadian. She's had a couple big hits but she hasn't generated that much buzz. 

 

Maybe she'll bag a couple more hits but the novelty will eventually wear off. I think she'll have a hard time at that point since her voice and singing style are polarizing. 

She lacks charisma and I literally hate to use this term after its usage by a tv show, but she lacks the 'X' factor, a unique flavor/ artistic take/ ambition/ edge.

 

She is the definition of generic/ bland. Having an Rn'B inflected sound can be divisive in non U.S. markets and the clothing she wears in her videos appeals to guys but alienates girls.

I really think she's just so young and her public life doesn't seem to be on full display.

 

Also, she seems to have disappeared shortly after the album release? Is she still releasing singles rn or?

Stronger albums. She also needs to promote them and not vanish after a week

The special niche that she has to set herself apart from the others.

She needs to pick an audience and appeal to them with her music, but also be vocal about issues that she supports. She obviously doesn't have to support everything, but she needs to make it clear that she supports something that her audience will click with and relate to.

before, she was just doing billie cosplay, then olivia and now she's found her sound. she might be good if she stays in her own lane. 

 

she needs to drop the unbearable bananees and avocadees vocal style tho.

Right, like she's already achieved more than what most people on this forum ever will in their entire lives.  The thinkpieces on this girl I swear... I remember people used to do the same with Ariana back when she didn't have any #1 hits while others like Miley and Meghan did, and now she has the most #1 singles from her generation of pop girls.

She feels like a one hit wonder now. Greedy was great but where is the follow-up? Where is the increased presence? Where is the artistic identity? She needs an aesthetic (whenever I've seen her perform her style has been tragic) and she needs to commit to slaying a dance routine instead of bleating adlibs all over her songs live. 

For me it is the baby voice and the lack of good songs... it's all a bit meh...
