I honestly am surprised since he has massive tours and smash songs & albums. Did he not build a fanbase?

His stadium tour is doing like 5million per date, it will be the same for Justin Timberlake despite the album not doing well, his tour will be very successful. They've clearly become more legacy acts that make their money from touring while Atrl is busy celebrating their "downfall"

Because he didn’t promote it? 
His tour started with the album Equals, which had the hits Bad Habits, Shivers & 2Steps. He just released the other two acoustic albums during the tour. Eyes closed was promoted but definitely underperformed and AV didn’t even had a single (which is sad, because Punchline is his best song). 

Let’s wait for his new pop album to see, if he can still have a successful era.
