Fantasize has a catchy chorus, the boy is mine not so catchy

fantasize is a cute track don't know why people go crazy about it

IMO, the boy is mine eats fantasize for breakfast. 

The chorus might not be as catchy, but it’s better written. 

Fantasize has that exact 90s vibe teens and young listeners dig nowadays. Written for this album or not, she should’ve pushed for it to be released. Would have been a top 10 for sure.

According to Ariana, it was deliberately written as an over-the-top parody song for a comedy sketch or show, meant to capture that '90s girl group' vibe. It's a fun trashy bop, but as you said, it makes sense that it wouldn't make the album.

 

Honestly, with how vague Ariana has been about the project it was associated with, part of me wonders if it was meant for the early version of "The Idol". It's very Jocelyn-coded (but make it late 90s-early 00s) 

 

But to be fair, it does seem writer and producer Savan Kotecha, who was involved in 2020's "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga", was doing a project based on this era of pop music, with "true story" also being rumoured to be meant for it. He's worked on several major hits for Ariana, so that seems to be the more likely origin. Looking forward to any eventual confirmation. 

Fantasize is so boring. TBIM is so 90s coded.  

"the boy is mine" doesn't hit as much as "fantasize" does.

both are good, she needa do a 90s theme album.
