Billboard started this with the aim of putting them in a box and the sad part is that Kpop fans continue to do this. The fact that these artists are Korean doesn't mean that their songs should be labeled as "Kpop" and isolated. I think the same about Rose, but of course I don't know what her fans think. Maybe it's just me who thinks this way. You make a very valid point. It’s the same way Billboard pigeonholes black artists making pop music as R&B or Urban. It’s very limiting and high key racist. But at the same time, I guess because it was music made in the k-system, they brand it that way. Either way, it’s racist and not right. 1 2

R&B and Urban are an actual music genre. If a Black artist releases an EDM song, that's not R&B. K-Pop is Korean Pop (not "Pop in Korean", that's important). You don't have a "K-Pop" sound, you can release an R&B in Korean and that'll double as a K-Pop song. If you're a Korean artist releasing songs within the Korean idol system, you're making K-Pop no matter the language you sing. 1

Save-Me-Oprah Posted Sunday at 05:27 PM Posted Sunday at 05:27 PM Would y'all call Taehyung's R&B & jazz album a "K-pop" album just because it was released by a Korean Idol? Apparently Billboard does because because they listed it at #2 on their "25 Best K-Pop Albums of 2023" list 2

The similarities were in marketing and video production, never sound (and those marketing and video production aspects have changed drastically now and it's all more Western-like, to that I agree). What is "the K-Pop sound"? It doesn't exist, because it's not a genre. 2

Being R&B and jazz doesn't prevent it from being pop, or K-Pop for that matter.
illia Posted Sunday at 05:34 PM Posted Sunday at 05:34 PM K-pop has never been a separate genre It's literally a Korean pop music that's it. Now it's used as an umbrella term for most Korean artists, whether they actually identify themselves as being a part of "kpop" or not 2
