ctlp27 Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Super cast (Cailee is a future major after this and Priscilla) minus Joel (atrocious writing, over the top acting, felt completely unrealistic, which is what the movie is still trying to do). Great direction. Okay movie overall. I would have loved to have loved it, but outside of its very interesting perspective, this should not be called Civil War. There is no concern for the roots of the problem, which could have been set in any other country. If you put it in the US, my guess is that you're trying to make a connection with a Western audience that may have trouble connecting with Civil War stories in a culture they have no ties to. The ending is really bad. Felt terribly clichéd in many ways, especially one particular scene involving 2 characters. Like slow motion in 2024? Seriously?
Dula Peep Posted April 17 Posted April 17 There were definite moments that were giving The Purge, I think casting Offerman as the President cheapened it for me…but overall it was good.

It felt like he existed purely to deliver the stoic, wise, cheesy lines "funny - this place reminds me of everything I remember" like c'mon. * If you're talking about Kirsten's death, I sort of agree. I liked the device of using the camera stills to build tension and break up the combat, but it felt like they used her death as a way of really making the most of that creative device, but it actually made the ending a bit cliche. I would have like to have seen the younger journalist get shot and confirm what Kirsten was afraid of happening from the beginning. Overall I really enjoyed this movie though. I didn't know anything about it going in so I was pleasantly surprised. The tension is maintained really well throughout. I was holding my breath for half the movie. Like others have said, it would have been nice to have a bit more context on the war itself but I think it's not really what the film is about. But saying that, I don't know that the journalist angle is quite meaty enough either.

I had rather liked all journalists to be killed to make a statement about how this is an often forgotten casualties of war. I do feel also that Jessie's reaction, or non reaction, was a bit out of character. I get the "journey" from being sensitive to desensitize but it's not realistic to have that in let's 5 days.
Rotunda Posted April 28 Posted April 28 I just got out the theater…I was not enthused . I'll expound on this later but I feel like by 20 minutes in most of us probably knew exactly 3rd act would look like, and the character development isn't necessarily strong enough to make up for that.

Spoiler Yeah for sure. I don't know that I fully believe Jessie would have whipped her camera out in that moment. Also, there's no way she'd have captured the four or five shots that we see from her perspective on a 35mm camera because she'd have had to wind the film on so quickly that it doesn't work.
Cooper Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Incredible film. A directing tour-de-force. Been on my mind ever since I saw it a few weeks back.
