I think because it was a bit of a departure from her debut and landed more in line with Mariah's influences 70s Motown soul, disco, jazz. One of her best but I can see why it didn't smash, relatively-speaking.

I am also impressed by 78,5 million song certifications. She may have already crossed 80-85 million song sales in the US alone. 

 

And yet nobody believes that she has outsold Céline in total units sps records. 

 

Mariah has sold 165 million recordings in the US (albums + singles). And people are still going with this 250 million global total... (for almost a decade now). 

 

I'm so impressed with her career.
