You can say that beyonce has surpassed Madonna in certifications, but NEVER in sales.

Congrats to Beyoncé that's pretty impressive.

 

Though I find these sorts of comparisons between artists of different eras to be kind of odd, given that the sales climates in each are so different. For example, Madonna's peak(s) were during the era of album sales, and her most successful 1980s albums would have been re-released in multiple formats as times have changed (vinyl and/or cassette then compact disc then digital download then streamed file) which might mean fans repurchase albums in formats once others are deemed out-dated whereas Beyoncé's peak was at the tail end of the physical sales peak and whose only format change since her debut has been streaming.

 

Conversely, Beyoncé's peak was during the era of digital song sales, and so unsurprisingly she would be able to make up ground based on the strength of singles sales at a time when Madonna's commercial success was slowing down.

 

Similarly, comparing stuff like Aretha's Hot 100 stats with Nicki's, or even stats from before the Soundscan era and after ... it's always a bit murky when it comes to comparing 1-to-1.
