The entire live entertainment industry is. They don't do shows as a service to their fans no matter how much they try to pretend it is.

They used to be where entertainers' careers went to die but Queen Celine turned that around

no. i love being able to see a lot of my faves in intimate theatres for about (or even less) than what i would pay for an arena or stadium tour. also most vegas residencies have some wednesday night shows and vegas hotels are really cheap sunday-thursday (a lot of times even free through the casino loyalty programs). you can usually get pretty good flight deals into vegas too during the weekdays. i go several time a year for the pop girl shows for less than what a lot of people i know spend on 1 big vacation

No. At least not in a way that's more elitist than live entertainment in general. Concerts, theatre, opera, symphonies, music festivals, etc. can all be very expensive, even for 1 ticket.

Not really but Vegas residencies have come a long way ever since Céline changed it completely.

 

In recent years, the likes of Adele, Drake, Cardi B., Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Usher even big touring forces like U2 & Garth Brooks are doing residencies as well.
