GraceRandolph Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 It feels like social media has made being a narcissist easier than ever. Trump was elected President while exhibiting the most narcissistic qualities. Nowadays some amount of fame or attention can be attained fairly easily through appearances, humor, controversy, or clout chasing. Popular advice focuses on self-care, and even therapy is highly individualistic, focusing on fixing your own faults as a means of possibly fixing the world. There is no anti-war movement, and although we are more globally aware, solidarity and support still feels rare. 4
imabadkid Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 yes... think about it, for people who are self involved and narcissistic, social media is a platform where literally everything u do is 100% about u. 2
Terrielle Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Facts, and everything around us encourages it. People aren't even aware of how narcissistic they are. 1
PoisonedIvy Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I have to be honest, it’s just the nature of existence. Think about it. On a cellular level, without any form of conscience, the literal only driving force behind life is to gather resources and stay alive. Those cells can’t do that without being selfish as they’re in direct competition with other cells for the limited resources it takes to survive. We are just extremely complex multicellular organisms but we can’t fight the very nature of our DNA — to prioritize the survival of the self. 1
St. Charles Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Yeah but I notice a person will support a toxic / rage baiting person UP UNTIL they do something that happens to offend them. It’s like those people who post homophobic stuff and people laugh, then they post something racist and people act surprised (or vice versa). It’s all our faults for this as a society tbh
Trent W Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I agree with everything except the therapy part It needs to be individual to do some inner work and change, there is no way to correct yourself without inner work, then you can do it collectively.
teresaguidice Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 not to say this isn't true or hasn't accelerated in the last decade, but "western society is culturally sick with narcissism" has been a common diagnosis of nihilistic sociologist types for like the last 100 years. for example, lasch's "culture of narcissism" was published in 1979 and had a similar diagnosis. 1
