I think Cruel Summer’s best chance for #1 would have been as the 2nd single. OTR was just too strong at the time, and would have blocked whatever was the first single. Taylor should have only released one of ME or YNTCD (preferably YNTCD), then CS and Lover, then end the era. Taylor still has a #2 peak with the lead single, and a better chance at a #1 with CS as the 2nd single.

 

But at the end of the day (even through the ME and The Man mishaps), it all worked out. Who knows if CS is as big if it was released in 2019 instead of now.
